copyright question

ok im sure one of you will know the answer to this............. How long does copyright last ?
the reason im asking this is that my partners gramps died a fortnight ago, and his daughter found three very old photographs showing a coming of age ceremony for the current estate owners father, Sir Charles is around 70 himself , his father wasnt even married at the time so it must be i would say at least 75 years old if not more. I have been asked to restore the three photographs as they have been smoke and water damaged after a fire, and while i was working on them i found a copyright mark at the bottom of one. The name itself has been obliterated and Sir Charles doesnt know who took the photographs. i dont see that there is a problem with the restoration of them as they are going to the original owners anyway. but i would out of curiousity like to know if the copyright still stands, and if so is there anyway of finding out who took them from so long ago?

a long shot i know but hey who knows! lol

TIA

Fi

Re: copyright question

I stand to be corrected on this but I think it is generally while the photographer is a live and then 70 years after his/her death..............but like I say I stand to be corrected

Re: copyright question

My understanding is the same as P-E's but its only from memory

Also as you are not making profit or reselling the shots, plus they are going to the original owner I would think that you will be safe

Re: copyright question

I'm with you guys, but from my memory it was only 50 years, however my memory is very sketchy at the best of times. There is however a book called "Beyond the Lens" that goes into detail about copyright, also the guys at the Association Of Photographers based in Leonard Street in London are very helpful about these kind of issues (normally), so they are worth a call for the absolute correct information, details are found at The Association of Photographers

Hope this helps!
