Question Corrupt images.

A question here for some of the older hands, was out all day yesterday to get some shots i was after, in the camera all was fine showing image preview etc,got home & put the card into the card reader & copied them into the file they were to go, all fine to, i then opened up CS2 Bridge to edit the RAW images only to see that 8 images didn't show only a grey box instead, checked to see if id done it right which i had so then used Rescue Pro to see if i could recover them, done that & then rechecked them in CS2 to see what i had, this time the missing images were showing but half way down they had horizontal lines in lovely different colors across them & said the file was corrupted, the shots that this had happened to were the ones that looked the pick of the bunch to totally confused to what has happened here anyone know?

Re: Corrupt images.

There are some things which I dont understand as well, the trouble is it dont always happen but whats happened to you has happened to me as well when I go out to take photos I always make sure all is captured on the card, when I get home I sometimes check a certain image out sometimes I will take it to photoshop and maybe turn the picture upright from a landscape but after I have finished I dont save the alterations I have made so the image finishes up back on the card, now if I try to view that image on the cameras screen a message comes up no data found! if I put the card back into the computer it is showing on the card, its like simpbows problem isnt it, but at the end of the day I still have my picture although I cant view it using the cameras screen!

Same kinda thing, i have a preview picture in camera but not on screen, forgot to say that the card was formatted with the camera before any shots were taken.

Re: Corrupt images.

Have you tried downloading the images from the card onto another computer, or using another reader? I've had a case where a duff USB cable/connector caused file corruption during transfer.

Re: Corrupt images.

Never seen this problem. However, after returning from a Photoshoot, I always copy files from the CF card to my hard disk before doing anything else. Then I check that the hard disk copies are fine before re-formatting the card on the camera.

Re: Corrupt images.

If your camera is displaying the image properly then it means the camera is reading your card correctly. If the card reader you are using to transfer the files to your computer is seeing the files as corrupt, simply use the camera as the card reader and transfer the files to your computer directly from your camera via a cable. I've had this same thing happen several times and the camera/cable solution works every time.

Re: Corrupt images.

Yeah, I'd suspect probs with the reader or maybe the card

"Formatting" in-camera does not format the card, just initialises the card and deletes any images from that camera manufacturer (and not data or images from other cameras!). A corrupt card needs to be truly formatted otherwise you'll continue to get probs - can be done from PC but make sure you keep to FAT or FAT32 (if Windows then use Properties to find file structure and then format to that file structure)

Re: Corrupt images.

Swiz! When I saw the headline, I was sure this was going to be about politics.

Markulous is right about the "formatting" or lack of it by the camera. If the card is becoming unstable, you might be able to rebuild it with this: HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool - v2.1.8 Download - EXTREME Overclocking but that's an emergency only approach.

If in doubt, throw it away. Cards are so cheap now that you really don't want to take a chance on destroying irreplaceable images for the sake of a fiver or so.
