Crisis of confidence

I'm having a crisis of confidence so need to ask a basic, simple question please.

Using Canon dSLR, shooting in AI Servo Mode (tracking) with auto focus.
AF point selection, do you select:
a) centre AF point only
b) all AF points
c) other (please specify - thanks)

Re: Crisis of confidence

depends what you are shooting. I usually keep my selection as the centre one, but i will change it when composing a shot if the focal point is something i want off centre. but usually change it back once i have finished

Re: Crisis of confidence

I find that selecting all points in AI Servo risks AF confusion on the 40D as there aren't enough focus points and the AF system isn't quite as clever as on the 1D series, so it's better to select the centre point (or any other single point) and try to track the subject with that.

But that's just my 2p.

Re: Crisis of confidence

I would choose a single focus point for the position in the shot where I know I want perfect focus. (eg. Horses head if shooting horse jumping). So if you are shooting portrait & horses head is usually 2/3 way up the shot, choose the nearest focus point accordingly & track head of horse against that point. Did that makes sense

Re: Crisis of confidence

I use the focuspoint (single) that is the one I want to be in focus. Cycling shots, for example, I set the point on the face of the cyclist (usually in portrait format), keep it there as I pan and fire away when it seems right.

ERM just looked up and more or less that is what Dave said

Re: Crisis of confidence

Selective point for me (usually centre). Sometimes have 'assisted' points enabled around the selected one depending on what I'm shooting. This is on a 1D body which has quite a customisiable AF system.

Re: Crisis of confidence

Depending on comp depends on which single point I'll use and when necessary use manual focus (head on rushing towards me), so I've set up AF with the * button (so no switching to MF) and if subject stationary no need to switch AF points - focus, recompose, shoot

Re: Crisis of confidence

I also set the focus point for where the cyclists head will be in the frame.

I use a selective point, for where I want the point of focus to be.

Re: Crisis of confidence

Good stuff, thanks all. Confirmed my thoughts.

I only ever use a single focus point (centre of one of the others depending on what I'm doing) but wondering what others might do.

Testing out the newly repaired 40D and hit rate yesterday far lower than usual. Maybe I just need to get used to it again (been using the 20 for a couple of weeks) or maybe I'm just having an off-time - hence crisis of confidence and feeling totally downhearted.

Ho hum.
