Diffusers right way or wrong

I just read about some tissue paper or paper towel folded over the flash it self caused the flash to have brown spots . I have limited experience with flash,,any advice will be welcomed. I am now looking at some attachments that arn't made of paper and don't sit right next to the flash surface.

Re: Diffusers right way or wrong

Ideally you want to bounce some of the light off the (white) ceiling and/or increase the area of the source of light to avoid the harsh shadows you get from a standard flashgun head.

You can buy ready-made diffusers such as Stofen or the Lightsphere type. Stofens are small and handy but IMO don't help much unless there's handy ceiling, and the Lightspheres are very cumbersome.

Take a look at....

DIY Reflector-Diffuser

You can do something similar with some thin, white, expanded foam packaging and a rubber band, and the diffuser will fold or roll up easily to fit in your bag. If you can't find the right sort of material, it is sold as laminate flooring underlay - although some of this is green and therefore no good.

Re: Diffusers right way or wrong

Some of those are very nice, I like the home made ones. I was doing some stillife and some macro, this is where I ran into some trouble. I now have the MT-24EX twin light and a brand new learning curve to wiggle around in. I made a reply in the galleries about tapeing tissue to my camera flash and don't want anyone doing it if it will cause damage to the pop up flash it self. I think I have found diffusers for the twin but still looking.

Re: Diffusers right way or wrong

I have the Stofen diffused for my 430EX Speedlite. Results are okay but if you are using the flash directly forward it still tends to be a bit harsh for close-in subjects and if you angle it up you better have a handy white ceiling or the result tends to be under-exposed. So no easy answers - aside from those big bolt-on soft boxes for flash guns I guess.
