dilemma

i have a problem

a friend of mine is pregnant and wants me to do a maternity shot.

thats my dilemma, i cannot think of anything more horrifying and ugly than a pregnant belly, and not only does she want me to do a maternity shot she wants a " demi moore" shot..............

I havent yet come across something or someone that i have shot that i cant get a connection with and feel something for. but a maternity shot............. i only feel repulsion.... and i always vowed i would never do one......

but i cant get out of it .......... ideas pls!!!!!!

how do i turn it round to get some emotion and feeling in it?

Re: dilemma

Just look around at what others have done.

Pregnant bellies do nowt for me either but then again nor do weddings LOL.

I think you'd be better asking your friend exactly what she wants. Take it as a learning experience

Re: dilemma

Well ask her husband or partner to be in the shots as well. If she has other kids they are just as perfect to kinda have them be around and sorta "cover up the belly" for you as you shoot. You don't have to tell them that..you just have to put them in such a way that when you look through your lens you see LESS of the belly. [The actual shoot is hard as she is will be walking around half naked with her belly out] and also, long white sheets to cover most of her belly is also a nice artistic touch to these shots. However, at the end of the day you pretty much going to have to do a few full on shots as really that is what most moms want. I feel for you....personally I would love to do maternity shots...but it is not for everyone.
Last idea for you is to PUT or DRAW things on her belly to help it look different....heart shapes are popular but so are words like LOVE, or PRECIOUS.....If her partner/husband in there then you can think of it more as a couple shoot than just the belly.

Hope that helps and hope things work out...for both your sake...I know how special these moments are to expecting moms...and I know how it is like to take pictures of things or people you are not 100% passionate about.

Re: dilemma

lol its not fear, its just horrible........
unfortunately her partner lives in France and she has no more children her last one was born asleep . as its a semi nude shoot as well it would be totally inappropriate to have children in the shot.
ahh well will just have to m ake the best of it i guess, thanks for all the suggestions!

Re: dilemma

There are certain types of shot I just will not take....
You point a camera and someone does the "Quick do a silly face" thing makes me annoyed, especially if it ruins what could have been a good natural shot....

Little children who run up tug your trousers with the "take my picture take my picture take my picture" thing also annoy me....
Especially if you have no idea who they are?...

Pregnancy shots?...
If a photo I am taking contains a person who is pregnant, then so be it, its not as if I have the "right" to ask them to step aside from a group shot just because they are pregnant...

But to take shots to GLORIFY the pregnancy?....
I cant do that.
I agree with Fiona on that.
I have no moral high ground anywhere that makes me uncomfortable with it, its just I dont see it as something you would glorify... its nice to know its not just me though, so thanks Fiona, I aint that weird after all?....

"Demi Moor" shot?... that means Nude?...

I resisted my initial response for a couple of days to sit and think about my reply.
I too would find that kind of shot difficult... I wouldnt be happy doing it either...
I asked some friends off the board, one being a local "press" photog, and the replies I got were mixed, but, the one continuing reply from all of them?...
Be Honest.
Whereas doing "New" material is challenging to most, if you're uncomfortable doing it, dont be pressurised into doing it.
Tell your friend that you feel uncomfortable with the situation.
If they are a true friend, they will understand...

Also, being uncomfortable and not experienced with that type of shot, if it should go wrong?...

lol no your not that wierd...........

I have spoken to her and we are not going to do Demi moore after all, but i have found some hopefully more tasteful shots that we will try to do.

I get what you are saying about being honest, but i also know what this means to her especially with her history.
and i doubt she will be as relaxed infront of someone she doesnt know as well............ stuck between rock and hard place!

Good... now you have a dialogue going, and she is "aware" of your reservations, you can get down to what you can and cant do and get to a compromise....

Strange, isnt it, how coincidences collide...
Friend of mines wife is Pregnant, he wants to Video the birth....
Asked me for some tips..."You have a Videocam, how would you do it?.."
I was able to make an immediate "Dont ask me, its not something I would do" reply before he asked any more....
I think he got the idea it made me uncomfortable even thinking about it.??...

Re: dilemma

ew no way would i do that, i would definately draw the line at that < shudder> although i have to wonder why on earth anyone would want to video it in the first place. I would take a bet its the guy who wants to do it not the woman cos i bet if most woman saw themselves throughout childbirth they would ban any sort of camera near them!

Re: dilemma

Not sure if you've done it already, but my suggestion would be to get her to focus on the baby. Make the shots meaningful for the occasion, get her to talk to the baby (belly), touch it; the photos should always have a focus on the baby (belly) and the relationship between it (or him/her) with the mother.
cheers~

Re: dilemma

I really don't envy you here Fiona. My wife and I have 4-children and the pregnant belly repulses me.

I could simply not photograph something that I could not see the beauty in.

Best of luck though, hope the pictures turn out to your friends liking.

What about through a sheer curtain - you know soft and dreamy and perhaps not quite so "in your face" -

I'm a bit sad how many people don't find something special in pregnant tummies but I guess if we were all the same life would be very dull.

But what you can now do is to record this special time in their lives for ever - AND you can also give them something unique. They can only ever see themselves from their own viewpoint. Even a mirror image is not how they appear to the rest of the world and they only see themselves from a very restricted viewpoint. You can give them the gift of how others see them, and not only that, they are going to be looking at their best too!

No wonder they want you to photograph them.

I am "With you" on this one...

Willow, as you say, if we were all the same, life would be dull, however, not everyone likes Page three shots, and I HATE the visual images presented by one lady gaga....

So the question therefore goes back to the original dilemma that Fiona posted, when asked to do a shoot that is outside your experience, ad outside maybe your own comfort zone, how best to deal with it?...

From MY standpoint, and I do not ever expect anyone else to think of it as anything else but just that, I think there are certain things that you should be able to say no to.

In the UK, a tv "Soap" series has done a bit on Baby swap.... it has become the most complained about episode in history....
Very "Controversial", so why did they do it in the first place?...

I am not building any Moral High ground here to stand on, I am just putting up examples of how some people differ in opinions?...

Fiona and I have the same problem, we accept pregnancy for what it is, and as a repeat offender in being a Father of three, I can never decry pregnancy as distasteful, for it is anything but, but where Fiona and I agree on this (I think???) is that we both find the process of doing naked pregnancy shots slightly against what WE are prepared to do in the name of our "Hobby".....

If we were both Professional, perhaps it may be different?...

However, Naked shots...
Personally, I am not sure where I would be if asked to do a full naked shot of anyone.
Let alone Pregnancy...
I would be uncomfortable, to say the least...
Its not my "Style" of photography.
If there is anything I can say I prefer, its perhaps those shots I take myself without any person in them?...

I also prefer to photograph the unusual, moments in time that cannot be posed, say a bird in flight, a Car on a rally in mid-air...

To be forced to do something like a posed Group shot is therefore not in my Comfort zone...

So, do I have to now be forced to learn how to do group shots, as its "Something all photographers MUST do", or should I carry on enjoying what I get from photography?...

As stated, we are all different...
Some people find the subject of pregnancy a wonderful topic to photograph, and I am not saying they are wrong in that, what I am saying is, for those who DONT find it a pleasing topic, how do we tactfully avoid getting involved?...
Especially when someone PRESUMES that you WILL be happy to do what THEY want?...

That last thing we want is to upset anyone unnecessarily.

We have in this street a young lady, of about 4 or 5, who whenever she sees my Camera gear (Or anyone elses) immediately does the "Take MY photo" thing, and does a "false" pose-and-smile....
You get past these things by doing a quick snap and showing the child, and then when she has gone elsewhere, delete...
However, after about 20 or 30 requests?...an hour?...the child on one event (Bonfire night) was wandering around demanding to be in every photograph taken...
