Dilemma with wide angle lens choices

I have been using the 400D + Sigma 10-20 in the past 6 months and this has been my favorite camera lens combination.

However, my dilemma comes into play when I have just bought a 5D2 this Christmas... since I am no long able to use the Sigma 10-20 lens on the 5D2, I have 3 choices (actually 2 as I cannot convince myself with last choice)
1. Keep 400D + Sigma 10-20 for wide angle shots
2. Sell my 400D + Simga 10-20; Get Canon 17-40 4L to use on 5D2
3. Sell my kidney to get Canon 16-35 2.8L (or adapter + Nikkor 14-24)

Option 2 seems sensible but 17mm will never be as wide as 10mm (or 16mm in FF). Wide angle lens is all about the widest end so I am totally stuck with this dilemma!! Could anyone bring me some light?!

Cheers,

Re: Dilemma with wide angle lens choices

I am sort of in the same situation. I had a 20D (1.6x crop body) and was happy using the sigma 10-20mm lens with that but recently changed to a full frame camera. Luckily I have a 17-40L as well and thats proving to be a great match on the new body and all but replaces the 10-20mm leaving me not wanting to go any wider and nicely filling that gap.

I don't know if I would sell a second body to go that way but fortunately I didn't need to...only you can decide if thats a worthy trade.

Re: Dilemma with wide angle lens choices

i would keep the 400D and lens, I always have a spare and good job i did as my 400D broke a few weeks before a wedding so lucky i had a spare one. I now had the 5D2 and 2 400D bodies.. plus i actually have loads of fun playing with the EF-S lenses on the 400D.

I thought you could use the sigma with the 5D2, i thought it was the canon version that wouldn't work?? either way i will still be buying the 10-20mm even if i can only use it with my 400D, it is still worth having.

Re: Dilemma with wide angle lens choices

The sigma version will physically work its just that the full frame sensor is to big for the lens to cast the right amount of light for and so you get vignetting as well as it showing all the limitations of the glass at the sides

Re: Dilemma with wide angle lens choices

I've bought a Sigma 12-24mm in readiness for FF If you want seriously wide, this is the way to go

The Sigma 10-20 on the 1D (1.3x crop is only usuable from 12mm) . I believe it cannot be used on 5D's due to mount protuding too far.

Re: Dilemma with wide angle lens choices

The Sigma 12-24 is an interesting lens - known as 'Popeye' because of the huge front element. I bought one to use with my 10D before all the APS-C wide-angle lenses came out, and later sold it to stepheno (who I think sold it on again!). It can certainly produce some dramatic effects but is rather soft at the edges. You can't use front-mounted filters - there's a gel filter holder ar the rear.

On balance I'd give it a miss and get the 17-40L which is excellent. In reality I doubt if you'll notice the difference in angle of view between that and the Sigma 10-20 on your 400D, and the extra stop of the 16-35 shouldn't be needed, given the high-ISO performance of the 5DII.

Just my 2p again.

Re: Dilemma with wide angle lens choices

As Silkstone says I bought his 12-24 and certainly had some fun with it. Around that time I also bought a 17-40 but in the end I sold both to fund a 16-35 MkII...and that I'm keeping

I might add that when I bought a 5D I decided to keep my 40D and have not regretted that either.

Re: Dilemma with wide angle lens choices

haha!! I know your feeling stepheno!! I'm totally bloke now... oh well I can fully focus on spending my quality time with my new camera

Thanks very much for everyone's recommendation!! I do think there is more value to keep the 400D + 10-20 then trading them off for a 17-40 4L lens.

I have actually tried to put the 10-20 on my 5D2 after reading your replies... (double checked from other online forum to ensure this wouldn't damage my 5D2!!) and it does work and would cast a circular shadow around the frame at all zoom range. I might actually make some photos like that as that gives a different feel!!

Sigma 12-24 seems a potential option but it's as expensive as the Canon 17-40 in Hong Kong. Some technical review site said it's not optically strong so I doubt how it will perform on a 5D2...

Oh well, I suppose I will keep everything I have for now... I really should focus on utilising the gears I have and work with the limitations rather than blaming I don't have the right gear!! At the end of the day I am still a beginner and I should learn things step by step

Thanks once again and Merry Christmas to you all!!
