dismayed with nikon.....

Having just spent 2800 on a shiney new D3, I find the software that comes with it...Nikons Capture NX2 is only a 60 day trial version and they want another 70+ for the product key!! Do they not think that when you spend so much on a camera, they should give you the software for free as part of the package??? I would expect it on the budget range SLRs, D40, D60 etc.

I know your all gonna say use photoshop but anyone any thoughts on this?

Re: dismayed with nikon.....

From time to time they have special offers that include the full version. Currently it is the D700 that is available with the full version.

I agree that you ought to get NX with the camera though.

Re: dismayed with nikon.....

That is dreadful after spending that much money. From what I understand you do not really need it if you have Photoshop etc. It makes you realise why people revert to pirate software.

Have you considered writing to Nikon head office to explain how you feel. You never know you may get a result and you apparently have nothing to loose.

Re: dismayed with nikon.....

A question slightly off tangent....... what do Nikon users (and anybody else) use a catalogue for their photos? Nikons Capture NX2? (unless they try and charge you for it, that is?)..... Photoshop and file structure on your machine / Aperture / Picasa / Lightroom???

Re: dismayed with nikon.....

I use the directory structure as a basic one-dimensional catalogue, and then iPhoto for albums and tags.

BTW it's pretty mean of Nikon to charge 70 extra for Capture NX - the D3 isn't cheap! It's probably counter-productive and will push customers towards other software.

Thats awful - how can they justify charging someone who has just paid that much for a camera? It'll bee interesting to see what nikon say! I know photoshop is brilliant but I don't think thats really the point - its more the principle!

Let us know what they say if you get a reply and good luck!!

Well I can assure you that with the D700 you get the trial version as well
I'm curious of what the outcome is going to be of your email. Although I doubt it whether they will give a product key for nothing.

How does Nikon NX2 compare with the latest Canon DPP (which is free)? I've not used DPP for a couple of years and know nothing about NX.

You are eligible for this promotion if you have purchased a New Nikon D700 between 01/11/08 and 31/01/09 I have seen them advertising it by WE for example and other internetshops, but don't think they do it no more.

OK...here it is!!!!!! Got a response from Nikon...

'Thank you for contacting Nikon Support.

I am sorry to learn about disppointment due to Nikon's decision not to include a full version of Capture NX2 with D3 cameras. I am forwarding your e-mail to Nikon Design & Quality Department for further processing.

If you have any further queries, please contact me by clicking on the link above to update this email.'

Are they going to design my very own version of NX2??????? Cool

However, I'm guessing not! Never mind.................watch this space!

I'll offer a draw on this one.

You can still submit your proof of purchase up the the end of the month, so it is still the current offer, although as you said, now expired for new purchases.

Re: dismayed with nikon.....

In the mean time you can either spend another 500 on a copy of photoshop or 0.00 on a copy of GIMP. Or in other words the industry standard or the quirky but capable freeware.

I agree NX should be included in the price of the camera Canon and Sony do!

Re: dismayed with nikon.....

The GIMP - quirky???

Well OK, if you insist! But it is pretty good and you can use dcraw or ufraw plugins for RAW processing. Not sure if the Windows version comes with ufraw as standard - Linux doesn't but Mac does.

You may as well try it - costs nothing as Steve says.

And with all the free brushes you can get (there's more than plenty for most people on dA alone!) there really is nothing to loose

I got the full version of NX (the first one) with my D300, but it was a special promotion, I agree that it should come as standard. Still, it's not that good (got the trial of NX2 as well), nothing on Photoshop really, so I wouldn't worry too much on that front.

Re: dismayed with nikon.....

It's just a shame that .xcf and .psd are not compatible/interchangeable, but you can't really blame GIMP for that.

It's certainly worth giving it a good trial and getting used to it. GIMP 2.6 is a little less quirky than previous versions, and if you get on with it you've saved over 600 plus the cost of regular updates.

Re: dismayed with nikon.....

Well, looks like the saga is over. Here is the final response from Nikon.

"Nikon have never given Capture NX2 away free, apart from when there is a specific promotion on. For example between November 08 and January 09, customers could receive the software if they purchased a D700. However, to my knowledge the software has only been given away on that one, specific, promotion. Promotions change quite quickly to suit market conditions, and vary from market to market so the best way to keep informed is to keep an eye on our website."

In other words...p**s of and pay or tough luck!!

Ahh well sounds like it's time to try GIMP and UFraw. All they cost is a download and with some skill and knowledge can produce some amazing results.

Then you can show us the the pictures taken with your new camera .

I really don't understand why Nikon expect people to pay for software when there's a better, free alternative. Especilly when you've just paid the best part of 3k for the camera.
