Do I take my camera?
Most of you will have heard about recent security alerts at our airports. With a holiday coming up it makes me wonder whether I want to allow my camera and lenses to go as hold luggage. Any thoughts appreciated. Story is here.

Re: Do I take my camera?
Time to dig out the compact. You must have seen the way luggage is thrown around. Can you imagine the overweight 30kg hard case landing on your camera bag? When I travel, my cameras are hand baggage or stop at home. I'd rather loose some shots on one occasion rather than have the hassel of claiming on the insurance, arguing over the repair/replace, and then maybe be without the camera for a lot longer than the week or so of the holiday.

Re: Do I take my camera?
I agree minimalistic is the way to go, I read a book called " A State of Fear " by Michael Crichton fictional I know, but it seems relevant in todays climate of another security fear, sorry this is going off the thread, but I'm bloody annoyed at this situation we are in, camera's are seen as an invasion of privacy, nobody cares if your kit is tealeafed ( shouldn't have brought it with you, you know it's a poor country ) sorry about the ramble, but the news of Imminent!!! danger gets my fingers typing, and no don't take your expensive equipment, to be misshandled or lost. Because of the limitations of size cms x cms and weight, of thought in the past I've sending my camera kit by UPS or FedEx to the Hotel we are staying at, and having all the pleasure of having everything I require there, but the price is probably prohibitive, anyway have a good holiday.

Re: Do I take my camera?
I know they're not the best things in the world but what about the
dissposable cameras, they're cheaper than a compact and if they get broken you're only lossing a couple of quid, rather than a compact. Just a thought hope it helps |

Re: Do I take my camera?
Thanks guys, you've confirmed my thoughts. I kept my S602 as backup so I think plenty of bubble wrap and in the suitcase.

Re: Do I take my camera?
This is where my trusty Olympus XA2 comes into its own:
35mm film ( ) can be picked up for about £10 on the auction sites, including postage, lovely little Zuiko 35mm lens, that takes cracking pictures! ...oh, and they bounce quite well when dropped, it's still working after 20 years! Small enough to pack into the very centre of your suitcase to go into the hold. |
