Do you Abstract Photography? is it Profitable? (in terms for selling them)

Do people buy abstract Images? Is there a Market For it? or do they mostly buy Landscape Photos? Would you say that your Sales are enough to make a Living? I am into abstract Photography and Thinking of Selling A selection of my images At some point down the road, and wanted to know, is it worth trying or would it be in vain?

Thanks

I am new here by the way.......Nice to meet you.

Welcome to Pixalo DinShyTheAbstractGuy

I would say that few people buy any sort of photographs and it is not viable to make a living purely out of photo sales.

I am happy to make enough to pay for the tools of my hobby. (some of them at any rate) Am looking to increase the toys that it allows me to buy...

alas I am generally better at shooting photos than I am at selling..

There's a market for every genre. Just a question of plugging into it - and having the interesting and the quality that'll be needed. Landscapes and portraits have the advantage of recognition and personal connection

Re: Do you Abstract Photography? is it Profitable? (in terms for selling them)

I guess a lot depends on how good your work is, but you only have to go in any big home store like Wilkinson's or The Range and see lots of abstract stuff on sale! I also see lots of friends with abstract stuff on their walls too. The problem lies in price, having sold the odd landscape myself you are almost fighting a loosing battle in that the cost of getting something on canvas or framed is far higher than you can buy 'similar' mass produced stuff in the home stores for a fraction of the price!!

I think it's increasingly difficult to make a living out of photography, especially with the proliferation of cameras owned these days. That being said I know photographers that make a bloody good living but they are 'very good' at what they do, not only as photographers but as business owners and at marketing their product!

That's just my humble opinion

Well my current "todo" list for photographic equipment totals around $7K when you include lenses I want.

So however much that list amounts to is a good start.

is this per month or Year? If that's per year I take it back, you're totally out of lack.

Re: Do you Abstract Photography? is it Profitable? (in terms for selling them)

Think of it this way. If you want to make $20,000 a year and you can sell a print for $10 profit, You will have to sell 40 prints every week. That does not sound a lot, but I think that it would take a lot of doing. If you try to increase the profit margin the required sales will decrease, but at the higher price point you will find fewer customers.

I still think it does not stack up to make a living from print sales.

I tend to agree. I was just stating how much I wouldn't mind earning to buy my wishlist

Re: Do you Abstract Photography? is it Profitable? (in terms for selling them)

Looking at what you could or want to earn is coming at it from the wrong angle in my opinion. The what, who and where's are what you need to look at first in order to arrive at the how much!!

What are you going to sell, the costs involved at doing this.
Who are you going sell these to, is there the market out there.
Where are you going to sell, online, local gallery etc.. and how are you going to market your product.
Intermingled with those questions are competition, who are you competing with?
Financial, how are you going to finance everything from printing to advertising?
Logistics, how are going to get your product to your customers etc..

Answering the above doesn't necessarily have to be complex but then gives you the how much you could possibly earn.

I guess there is still a great business opportunity available for abstract photography. But yes its not so much common like area of photography. I was thinking of starting product photography also.

Re: Do you Abstract Photography? is it Profitable? (in terms for selling them)

There is a quote going around at the moment that there were more photographs uploaded to the internet in the last two years than were ever taken in the last two centuries.....

Making money out of the art is now harder than it ever was.
And why there is so much of it for sale on internet hosting sites....
