Do you need a new Photo Magazine?

A new magazine specifically for Digital SLR has been launched.

The full story can be found here but what do you think. Will it be worth your hard-earned oncers or have we enough already. In fact do you read photo magazines at all?

Re: Do you need a new Photo Magazine?

I don't know. I do read magazines. So i will give it a go. But most of it I suppose you can find on the net aswell. And that is for free. This magazine will probably try to get you to buy stuff or give vouchers with discounts.

Re: Do you need a new Photo Magazine?

I think this forum is a whole heap better than any magazine you can buy from the shelves. There is enough experience in photography floating around in this forum to help people through some of the biggest photographic ordeals. I'll not be rushing to buy it, however i may if i had a long train journey.

Re: Do you need a new Photo Magazine?

I don't read that many photo mags anymore and usually only pick up the odd one that interest me if I am going on a long trip or possibly taking a flight. I have no allegiance to any one publication though and will flick through them in the newsagent before deciding.

Re: Do you need a new Photo Magazine?

I used to buy a few magazines on and off but it's not long before you see the same old topics coming round again and again, never getting more in depth terrible generalisations, rarely really up to date. I now only buy if I'm away and need something to waste some time.

The information that's available on-line is far more in depth and once you get the knack of sorting out the wheat from the chaff is more useful.

I also object to the price these days, £5.00 for a magazine that I can finish over a coffee when I can get a novel for under £10.00 that will last all week. I realise why this is, but it doesn't seem good value to me, I've lived in Yorkshire for 12 years now.

Re: Do you need a new Photo Magazine?

I have a subscription to two magazines: Digital Photo and Practical Photography. They are excellent and there is always something more to learn. I also have a big shelf full of books on all manner of subjects connected to photography. There are some superbly talented people out there and I love to hear from them. I am certain my own shots have improved by reading about how they approach their own shots. The likes of Andy Rouse, Heather Angel, Joe Cornish, Tom Ang, Tom Mackie, etc all have plenty I have found helpful as well as the older ones. As I have mentioned before, I have a superb book by the master himself, Ansel Adams, which I have read and re-read a lot even though he had never heard of digital. That of course goes to prove that the thing to learn about is photography, not a specific discipline of it. There are certainly specifics to learn to but recording a picture using light is what it is all about at the end of the day.

However, I may be tempted if this magazine focuses exclusively on SLR usage and doesn't then go down the path of constantly explaining how to add a bit of blur or saturation or sharpening, etc. If it takes people a bit depper than the difference between Av and Tv mode, it could well meet a need that definitely exists in the digital photography magazine world: one for more experienced users.

I am not trying to put myself up as too advanced for other magazines, anyone who knows me knows that is a million miles from the truth! I would just like to read a magazine that gets a bit deeper and explores some of the more advanced techniques that professionals use and so forth.

Cheers,
Rob

I am surprised that you like/value Tom Ang's work as everything I have seen from him has been at best average and uninspiring

Have you any links that may change my perception of his photography?

Re: Do you need a new Photo Magazine?

I wasn't too familiar with Tom Ang before you guys mentioned him above, after having a bit of a snoop on the internet for him i stumbled across this site...
BBC - A Digital Picture of Britain - How to Take Good Photos
Apparently Tom Ang tells you how to get the most out of your digital photography. It contains little Pearls of Wisdom such as....
1.Redder colours will create a warmer feel for your shots than blues or greens.
2.Colour affects the way we look at pictures, so try to use colour creatively in your shots.
3.Take lots of pictures. With digital they don't cost you anything.
4.Move around as you photograph to experiment and give yourself plenty of choice.

Maybe it's me but i'd love to get paid by someone to state the obvious.

That aside, there are also some helpful hints and tips on the page too also written by him. Just to be impartial in true bbc style.

I'm still going to keep looking for some pics as yet i've not found too many.

Re: Do you need a new Photo Magazine?

It is not Tom Ang's pictures that I like, I was referring to reading about how they approach photography. In his case, I learnt a lot about fine tuning pictures from his book 'Advanced Digital Photography' which explained various things a lot better and more simply than others I have read. In fairness, I read his book in my earlier days of digital porcessing but I still feel his methodological approach helped me a lot.

The reading of books by a range of others helps me see this craft in a different way rather than always doing things one way. Reading Ang, Mike Busselle, Lee Frost and so forth gave me a paradigm shift that has widened my perspective a great deal.

If I am honest, I can't say there are a whole lot of pictures by Tom Ang that have particularly inspired me but his ability as a teacher is something i respect, probably because it is my profession also.

Cheers,
Rob

Re: Do you need a new Photo Magazine?

I took out a subscription to Digital photo quite a long time ago and although they have tried to tempt me to renw the subscription and get another free gift, I have refused and just kept the old one going. Why? because it means I still pay the price I was paying over three years ago! They don't have anything as a freebie that I want. I already have a Lowepro Mini trekker, a monopod, a tripod and so forth so unless they suddenly come up with a must-have deal, I'll stick to getting the magazine at a better price. I only pay about £3 an issue which is pretty good when it comes with a decent DVD with tutorials and so forth on it.

I am not sure what they'd have to tempt me with now as I have most of the guy I need, especially in the price range they would ever give away as a tempter. Magazines often give away crappy things like spring leg mini tripods which would fall flat under the weight of anything bigger than a compact. However, I have kept a couple as they are useful for one thing: sticking a slave cell and small flash unit on if I want to have a slave unit firing.

If they ever give a hit tempter away, let me know. A Canon 30D perhaps?

Cheers,
Rob
