Do you use.......

.......keywords? And if so how? I do using Lightroom - I currently have 165 keywords and, for example, one keyword (urban) contains 635 images. I'm pondering whether to make "urban" a keyword set and/or should urban be part of a greater set

I'd just be interested to hear other people's modus operandi with keywords and then I might know where I'm going with this.......and not using keywords at all isn't an option. Thanks for any comments.

Re: Do you use.......

I tend to use multiple keywords. Enables layers of filtering. Having said that, although I always add keywords on import, I don't use them much to find images.

Your urban could be followed by church, or shops (or both) and any other relevant keywords. Then you can directly use any of the keywords to locate images or do one search then narrow the responses by using another one.

I think it is what makes sense to you or fits with your thought train.

Re: Do you use.......

I use keywords and it is important to me as I frequently do searches. I have 36 top level keywords some have sublevels sometimes two deep. In total that amounts to just over 100 keywords. I do have Urban as a top level but with Cityscape and Street as two sublevels. My keywords suit my photography and typical competition subjects. I usually apply two or more keywords to an image though some may only have one.

For the Club monthly competition, I might search for green (code for final Tiff image), 4* and above, date captured after Jan 2014 and Keyword Documentary. I can then search over 20,000 images in a fraction of a second and make my competition selection.

I have had a fairly stable keyword list for several years having transferred it from The Bridge 5 years ago. I try not to keep adding to it but do have to add new places from time to time.

Re: Do you use.......

Thanks - thats cleared my head. Both your reasonings suggests the use of keyword sets. Many of my keywords will be better as a set, urban for example as Dave said, and many will be better in a set. Thanks again.
