Re: dof

Depth of field is the part of the scene and hence the image, from front to back, which is in focus. A lens where the aperture is opened up to, say, f2.8 will give a shallow dof, good for portrait and macro where you want a blurred background. The opposite, say f22, will give you a deep dof which is good for landscape where you need the whole scene to be in focus.

Someone will give you a technical explanation but that's as I see it

Re: dof

I think of depth of field as being the range along the z-axis (near to far) which is in sharp focus.

There will be times when you want a shallow depth of field, e.g. in a portrait (when you want the focus to be on the person's face rather than the scenery behind him/her, so you blur the background by using a short dof), and other times when you want a long dof, e.g. a landscape shot, when you want max front-to-back sharp focus.

There are various factors affecting dof, like :
  • the focal length of your lens
  • how close your subject is to the lens (and to the background)
  • aperture
To minimise dof you could use :
  • A telephoto lens (which has the effect of compressing perspective)
  • A wide aperture
  • A short distance between subject-to-lens (the closer your subject is to the lens, the shorter the dof will be)
To maximise dof, you could use :
  • A wide-angle lens (which has the effect of stretching perspective)
  • A narrow aperture
  • Hyperfocal focusing (basically, focus on a point that is a third of the way into the scene)
That's the long and the short of it
