DoF Preview

As I am a newbie with dSLR's, I was reading through the manual and I came across the small button on the body to the left of the lens (EOS 400d). The manual says that this is a DoF preview.

If I press the button and adjust the f stop, this just seems to make the image in the viewfinder darker. This does make sense to me as it is adjusting the size of the aperature.

What I don't understand is how this relates to a depth of field preview?

Any thoughts?

Cheers
Paul

Re: DoF Preview

If you look very closely, it's only getting darker because the apeture is smaller, thus letting in less light and you will see that more of the shot is in focus. Try using it with the widest apeture you have and you will have only a small area of focus, then try it with the narrowest apeture and you will then see how much more of the shot is in focus. Best to do this outdoors in lots of light to see better.
Hope this helps.

Sarah

Hop you get on ok, it's all really just playing with the camera. Well that's how I learn these things.

Re: DoF Preview

Yep - Sarah has nailed it - when you push the button it stops the lens down to what aperture it is set at.

When you look through the viewfinder the lens is wide open to give you the brightest image. When you release the shutter, the mirror flips up so you do not see the camera then stops the lens down to the selected aperture to actually take the picture.

When the mirror returns the aperture is wide open again, the picture having been taken.
