Dogs..

Going to watch some dog racing in a couple of weeks and thinking of taking my camera.. What sort of settings would I need to freeze the action? I'll need to take into account the very fast action and the fact it will be at night under floodlights..
Thanks..

Re: Dogs..

the dog tracks are pretty bright with the floodlights so maybe using 1/250-1/400 shutter depending on the lights of course i know that the dogs near me has very good floodlights, it will always be slightly brighter at the start finish line aswell but the good pics in my opinion would be the turns

Re: Dogs..

i'd think you'd need shutter speeds almost double that to catch the dogs frozen in the moment with detail

Re: Dogs..

OK, I'll probably get shot down in flames for saying this but if you're going greyhound racing.....please don't.

Re: Dogs..

1/640 bit of blur 1/800 minimum no blur but looking at your equipment list you will have to use a very high ISO probably iso1600 upwards don't be scared to use iso3200 noise is better than a blured picture, what i would suggest is set it to shutter priority and adjust iso to get 1/200 and pan the shot
This is iso3200 F2.8 and i only got 1/200 i know its not greyhound racing but they go quick

Re: Dogs..

Angela, the dogs love running, my whippets would still go completely barmy if I took them to the track (I used to have to put a muzzle on my eldest as soon as she was in the car as she used to try to eat her way out). Not all owners/breeders of greyhounds are bad. I have a friend who breeds greyhounds, used to be for coursing and now for the track. She either keeps or rehomes her oldies, as do alot of others (we used to show a couple of them at Crufts as well). Perhaps we need to encourage and publicise the good a bit more, rather than publicise the bad all the time, which tends to happen in the media. OK we need to know what bad stuff is happening, but not at the price of not knowing the good. Lets not just ban things, lets sort them out and make them better.

Anyway, that's my thought for the day, agree with Leezon as well, you are going to need very high shutter speeds to freeze the action and a high ISO, but with my 40D I used to get a huge amount of noise at that level.

Here are some sites I found for inspiration for you

This one has some great shots Steve Nash Photography

actionshotsonline.co.uk - Greyhound Photography (powered by CubeCart)

The first shot is my favourite, it has the same expression my whippet has when running http://www.steve-nash.co.uk/gallery.html#

Re: Dogs..

about the greyhounds i have two friends both own and race greyhounds and they really look after them a lot of money gets spent on these dogs, as for crufts see that is the real problem for dogs did anybody see the program on crufts?

they breed ridgebacks with that ridge a cull all without it when in actuall fact the ridge is a birth defect which allows the spine to pertrude also leaving small holes in the animals backs straight to the spinal column ripe for infections,
then the dogs the police force use my minds gone blank of there breed, they are bred to have back legs crooked and they can hardly walk with the back arching so much the back end almost touches the floor they have trouble standing etc.
