Dont tempt the Monkey...Card Failure.

Reguarding a Hama High speed Pro 16gb CF card

I may need to apologise for misleading info......

On this forum I posted recently abut the chances of card failure being so remote that you shouldnt worry about them?....

Well, just last week, on a quick holiday break in Scotland at the Brothers Hotel, my large "I only need to take one card" memory card started to play up... gave a long pause displaying "Busy" in the camera screen....then refused to function at all.

And of course, despite my previous words, I myself had NOT taken a spare.....

I put the card into my Brothers computer card reader, which the saw a card, but asked if I would like to format the thing as it didnt recognise it at all.....

Complete loss of all data.

The fix?... know that you have Piriform "Recuva" installed.
[ Recuva - Undelete, Unerase, File and Disk Recovery - Free Download 100% "safe" and highly recomended.... ]
I put the card back in the camera, at home, and after ignoring the "card error" messages on the camera, did a format of the card.
Then into the card reader on my computer which now recognised a card that had a formatted partition on it, but saw no data.
I then ran Recuva...
It found nothing on its initial scan... as expected...
You then ask it to do a deep scan and search all, including deleted and formatted space....

ALL of the shots were recovered, from day one of the cards use....

I can guarantee that this program will recover from at least ONE re-format of any card, as long as the space used has not been written over by new files....

However...
Can I trust this card again?.........
No.

Second piece of info...
This is a 16gb card....
Of which the Camera reported as "In use", but on exploration with wind-woes, I only have a 8gb partition that is in use?....

I therefore suggest that the 350D canon has a max memory card size of 8gb....?
It wont see anything bigger, and will just format a 8gb partition.

Re: Dont tempt the Monkey...Card Failure.

Thank heavens you got them back, I must admit I've not heard of recuva, (I have the Sandisk recovery prog on my machine), but it sounds like a "must have" for just in case.

Re: Dont tempt the Monkey...Card Failure.

You might like to take a look at testdisk and photorec (http://www.cgsecurity.org/) as well. These are highly sophisticated, yet usable recovery programs that also work outside the Windows environment.

Testdisk can even recover over-written partitions, as long as the data is recoverable, and can recognise if a disk has been partitioned using NTFS layout (Windows NT, 2000 etc), and then overwritten with one of the Linux layouts.

Although I've only used it twice in anger, I keep a copy to hand in case there is no Internet connection.

Try here ... http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/27683/testdisk woody

Looks as if it should do the trick. I was surprised when you said that it was not available for MACs. Note: it is a command line utility so you have some work to do - much the same as I use it on Linux. Hopefully you will never need it.

Re: Dont tempt the Monkey...Card Failure.

I'm really glad I read this yesterday!
Yesterday afternoon, I thought I'd get rid of a few folders on my laptop, after backing them off. So checked one folder & yes, all on the external drive, so clicked that one folder to delete, now recycle bin was full, so it said no room in there do you want to just delete, so said yes, now here is the thing, bearing in mind, just one folder was ticked, the whole of the documents folder deleted!! Arrrggghhh!! But, having read this, I thought, don't panic, download Recuva & after 2 hours for it to find everything, I managed to find all the files & put them back on to an external drive, another 4 hours! But at least they are back.

Re: Dont tempt the Monkey...Card Failure.

Yes it does, luckily, I had done a back up of most stuff last week, all that was missing was the 365 for April, which was bad enough in itself! But I have found all those files in the list, so just have to make up all the folders again.

Re: Dont tempt the Monkey...Card Failure.

Disc Failure.....
Just to remind folks, inside the enclosure of an external drive, you will find a usually bog-standard SATA drive...

If the power supply unit fails on an external drive, and its JUST the power unit that has failed, do not despair, separating the internal drive from its housing and either inserting it into an "Enclosure" to make a new external drive or slotting it into a space inside a tower unit and hooking up the wiring to make it an internal drive, you loose none of the data on that drive.....

I just had to walk a friend through all of that, as his external half-terabyte photo storage drive just gave up on him....
Its now an Internal drive, and he WILL be getting, on threat of me confiscating his camera, he WILL be getting a new external drive as a Backup-device....
No more the half past ten at night "Help-I-am-in-a-panic" phone call.....?.. one can only hope.....

I do hope this is the last of my own personal memory storage unit problems?... they say they come in three's....
The third, for me, was last week, and a half-hour head-scratch to find the slot on a MP3 player where the Micro-SD card was supposed to go in?....
"Where are the instructions?..."
"In the box"
[If he says they are next to the lions cage?.... ]
"Where is the Box?..."
"Erm... I dunno.... aint seen it since I bought it...that was last month..."

Kids... gotta love 'em
