Re: Dumping the heavy gear

You may be aware that the viewfinders are often a live view rather than optical. Many early models had quite low resolution (under 200K) so were not very nice to use. I bought a Lumix FZ200 which has a viewfinder resolution of 1.3M pixels and is thus very good. It is certainly a point to consider.

However, I also bought the Bridge camera to save weight but in practice very rarely use it as the quality is no match for my full frame DSLR. I tend to carry it on outings when I do not expect to photograph anything (e.g. shopping trip with my wife) so carry it just in case.

So I now generally adopt a different approach with my DSLR and recognise that almost all attractive scenes are within 300m of my car.

Re: Dumping the heavy gear

You have to ask yourself do I want exhibition quality pictures or not, I know its a horrible question, I have the best camera that ............ever made but when I travel now I only take a lighweight DSLR with the standard zoom on, I was walking along the prom this morning in Benidorm..... oh if only I had my best camera with me! With my 28-300 mm zoom on(very heavy).... Happy New year everone!...

Re: Dumping the heavy gear

Hi Big ole Bear,,,, good to hear from you. You bring up a point only photographers ever run into. I have that same thought about another lighter camera. The one I have is like the LUMIX but is a Leica, same camera, no view finder but very easy to get used to. Mine is fairly grown up, 7 and 10 megapixels but I work between 5 and 16. Helps the computer. I am thinking about upgrading for the movie feature, this is my movie camera even thou I have better cameras for that. I have been looking around and haven't seen to many real good ones. Good luck and happy hunting.

Re: Dumping the heavy gear

Some good points there but I think the crux of it is the size v quality issue, and if you want better quaity then maybe the mirrorless cameras such as the Fuji X-T1 is worth looking at. -Oy- has one and has posted some supre pictures on here and I know a pro wedding photographer who used to use Nikon full frame kit who has swapped to the Fuji X-T1.

Re: Dumping the heavy gear

I ALSO HAVE AN XT1. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.
VERY LIGHT WEIGHT, EVEN WITH AN 18-55 OR 35 MM LENS, IT IS NOWHERE NEAR THE WEIGHT OF A DSLR BODY.

THE XT1 PRODUCES EXCELLENT RESULTS, FUJI HAVE FREQUENT SOFTWARE UPGRADES FOR THE XT1 BODY AND LENSES.

Re: Dumping the heavy gear

I rarely pick up my slr nowadays, my Sony A6000 being my weapon of choice. Although I do have a compact I don't like anything without a viewfinder especially on holidays in bright sunlight.
Just a thought, if you read enough reviews is there any camera that hasn't got some award somewhere?

Re: Dumping the heavy gear

As Always some very helpful comments , Boofers I looked at the Leica, and a couple of others i'm down to the Leica,Lumix, Canon, I subscribe to Which and have been looking at their top selection. I Love my SLR and have become quite competent I doubt exhibition quality though. it's the holidaying I have a little tough waterproof camera which is ok but limited out of the water bit penguin , and when your camera bag is to heavy for cabin luggage it's time to re-evaluate the contents.

Small world Des, I was also walking along Benidorm beach on the 26th
Hope you wasn't been conned by the 'find the lady' yobs who seemed the out in force that morning or the pick pockets who work those who stand around watching

I have been a Which? subscriber for many years, but I find their camera recommendations to be aimed at the happy snapper photographer and they appear to add weight to features that the more serious photographer will not find important.

Hope you realise that the Leica compacts are re-badged Panasonics that have the same spec but at a much lower price.

Re: Dumping the heavy gear

Hi got a LUMIX DMC-TC70 on the way home , had a little play seems okayed quite intuitive, time will tell I suppose but thanks for the info dabhand re Leica. Was a little surprised it didn't come with a charger. purchased a case that came with a spare batterie which seems odd, Nice case though. So thanks again I'm off the play for the long weekend if it ever stops raining .
