Expedition - and i want my camera

Hi everyone,

This usmmer i'm going on an expedition in the Tatra Mountains, Poland. It's with my school, partly DoE Gold and partly for anyone who wants a good time. Im just going for the good time. Obviously, i want to take my camera, a Nikon D40x. Now being outside all day i need to be prepared for the possibility of rain. I'll be carrying a 50+ litre rucksack, and i already have a Lowepro Rezo 180 which is quite a bulky bag. My question is - What should i use to carry my camera, in terms of a case?

A few things to take into consideration:

- It needs to be easily, and quickly accesible, because i can't be stopping, and unpacking every 5 minutes.

- I'm not too sure what lenses to actually take. I have an 18-70mm and a 10-20mm. Should i take both?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, i hope you can get the gist of what im asking lol (describing is not my strong point),

MiKE

Re: Expedition - and i want my camera

Things I'd definitely take:

- A few of those 'lockseal' poly bags - cheap and cheerful but guaranteed watertight!
- Chamois leather - perfect for laying over the camera if it's spitting/drizzling as it mops up drips (which might penetrate camera/lens)
- Lots CF cards
- Spare batteries

Optional:
- Some sort of rain hood in which to use camera if wet (tho' nothing stopping you adapting a poly bag!)
- More CF cards(!) or an image bank (hard disk system to copy pics for backup)
- More spare batteries or some method of charging them. I used an external power pack battery which will supply various voltages and kept all my gear charged on Everest Trek and Oz trip

Personally, I'd take both lenses - wide for the scenery and zoom for candids of fellow travellers plus various other pics along the way

Re: Expedition - and i want my camera

At the moment i have a Sandisk Extreme III 2GB. Would i be better getting a few more of something like this or say for example the Kingston 8GB? They'd come out at around the same price once you get several lower capacity cards.

My main issue the bag i already have. It's got a waterproof cover and i can carry all my kit, but it's not the easiest and quickest access (or is it?). I was thinking a toploader but then i'd need a way of storing the other lens which would possibly entail a hard lens case?

Also flash - i have an sb-800. Should i really take it? There is a potential of indoor shots as we're staying in log cabins (being a national park we cannot camp).

I get the feeling im thinking about it too much. I'll certainly get some stick for taking just the camera and one lens lol,

Re: Expedition - and i want my camera

Well, I'd go for multiple cards rather than one - if you get a card problem and everything's on the one card......... Yes, they are reliable but you never know and you could lose it!

D40X has an in-built flash? I'd stick with that, TBH, unless you know where you'll need a number of flash images

Something extra you may want to think about: a small tripod - for long exposures of those lovely sunrises/sets - and then there's always the group photo with the self timer!

Picstop currently have Extreme III 2gig cards for £12.99 here - bargain!

...And as for the bag, perhaps something like the Tamrac Velocity 5 might be perfect, it's a quick access hip bag on ebay here

Re: Expedition - and i want my camera

HAVE YOU CONSIDERED A LOWEPRO SLINGSHOT, THEY ARE EXCELLENT FOR EASY ACCESS AND YOU DON'T HAVE TO REMOVE THE BAG FROM OVER YOUR SHOULDER.

I KNOW YOU HAVE ALREADY SAID THAT YOU WILL BE CARRYING A RUCKSACK, BUT THIS IS AN IDEA.

Re: Expedition - and i want my camera

Im open to all ideas JMitchell, i've got plenty of time to trial some too

I've just ordered two 1gb Sandisk Extreme III's from amazon for £23 which is the best i could find. No doubt there's something better somewhere else but i tried sites i use regularly (play, 7day shop, amazon)

Thanks for the advice guys (and girls(im being turned PC) keep it coming

Re: Expedition - and i want my camera

As others have suggested, I would try to take both lenses. The 10-22 would excellent for capturing mountain scenery but the 18-70 would be excellent for photographing your friends and any other general photography. Is it too late for you to take part in the DofE Gold and complete other parts later? A DofE Gold is well worth having on your future CV. Not only do potential employers recognise the achievement, it will often attract a question. If attending an interview, it is very helpful to talk about a success.
