Extended warrantee help needed

My Canon 40d is just coming up to a year old and I am thinking of taking out an extended warrantee on it, but Canon do not offer anything and neither does the shop I bought it from. So with this in mind I had a look on line and found a number of companies that do offer this service, so before jumping in I was just wondering if anyone had done this or had any recommendations.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Re: Extended warrantee help needed

I would suggest that you don't bother. If you are averagely lucky, you'll be better off without - the warranty companies are out to make money, so they take in more than they pay out. The small print can also be a big problem.

I've had a Canon A1 that lasted 17 years, a 300D, a 10D, a 30D and a 40D, and none of them has gone wrong. By the time they do, they're old technology and you can buy something better for a lot less.

Just my 2p.

I would agree with Silky on this one.

Yup, extended warranties are just an expensive insurance (which make a lot of money for the companies/shops selling it - which shows what poor value they are)

I agree with everybody else and that is dont bother if your camera does not break down in the first few months of normal use it should last and keep going for a long time after, however cameras do wear out the same as cars and when they get old sometimes its wise to exchange them for a new one or a better one so keep your money in your pocket!

EU law states that your contract is with the retailer and if purchased within an EU member country you are entitled to a minimum 2yrs limited warranty from the retailer.EU directive 1999/44/Eu applies!

Thats right I forgot to mention that you have 2 years warranty, but some brands you have to register your new equipment on line, which is a good thing!

Re: Extended warrantee help needed

There is no such thing as EU consumer law. EU directives are implemented in each country using their national laws. The EU directive does not provide the equivalent of a 2 year warranty but enables you to claim statutory rights to insist on fit for purspose etc for 2 years. In fact UK law already exceeds this where your statutory rights under the Sales of Goods act exceeds the EU directive as you may make a claim against a seller for up to 6 years. The governement were considering implementing the EU directive as it is but the Consumers Association protested that it was a backward step and the House of Lords agreed with them.

I would not consider an extended warranty, I agree with others that it is a waste of money.

I know I'm likely to get flamed for this , but the only extended warranty I would consider (and actually have) is on Mac computers, especially if you can get the 3-year AppleCare Plan for peanuts with educational discount. It covers both hardware and (Mac) software, including the OS, and their telephone support was extremely good on the one occasion I've used it.

Aside from the expected "Well, of course you would as Apple are such rubbish" , if it was a good price then I wouldn't argue - just in my experience the cost of PC parts are such that it's usually cheaper to just buy/replace the part should there be a failure (and nowadays if it's a halfway decent system in the first place then it'll be reliable for a few years)

With respect to cameras, I managed to introduce sand into the shutter release of my Sigma SD10 (taking pics standing in the sea with a strong breeze will probably not've helped - so entirely my fault!). Sigma repaired under warranty with no charge as I'd only had it a few months. I also had a Mack Extended Warranty (all part of the eBay package) into year 2 and 3 which I never used (and the camera still goes strong after approx 70k shutter actuations)

I repeat that the EU directive is just a directive which each EU government sign up to but in itself is NOT law in any individual country. Each country agrees to implement the directive using its own laws which must be passed by Parliament in the UK. The UK considers that this is met by the Sale of Goods Act. This "2 year warranty" mentioned in the EU Directive is grey area in that it is considered to offer the consumer more than the Sale of Goods Act for the first 2 years but less afterwards. Some consumers have challenged retailers over this but retailers could legally adhere to the SOGA. It maybe that the grey area will be resolved by a UK court ruling or change to UK law at some stage but it has been there for many years now.

If you still think I am wrong, please supply the legal reference but I have had some legal training with respect to EU Directives and have carefully checked this information.
