Extenders

I have the Canon EOS 7D, and my best lens is the 70-200mm LS f4. I've been considering buying an extender to give me a bit more reach when I'm out and about in the countryside but it would be good to see some shots taken with this combination if anyone has any?

I've done some research and I'm aware of the limits of extenders but my budget just won't accommodate the lens I really want.

Re: Extenders

i have the x2 canon extender and on the same combination it is manual focus only. so make sure you knwo what you are letting yourself in for, cos an x 2 takes you down to max of f8 on that lens.

I rarely use mine because of that.

Re: Extenders

Here's a shot using 300mm f/4 IS + Kenko pro300 1.4x TC

Don't have a 2x TC as I wasn't keen on comments of drop in quality but I'll admit that I'm tempted by the new(ish) Canon MkIII 2x TC which has had excellent feedback and some very nice shots. Having said that, I've successfully stacked 2 x 1.4x TCs on my 500mm f/4.5 and managed to keep AF (used the tape trick) - but it was a very well lit bird and I've only used the combo just that once

Re: Extenders

yep you can use the tape technique but have to admit to not wanting to put sticky tape on anything costing me the amount the 7D and lens cost!

Nor would I! But the tape goes on the TC, which cost me the princely sum of £70 (hence getting rid of my Canon 1.4x MkII for considerably more - seeing as it didn't perform any better! )

Re: Extenders

Thanks for the input guys. Today I just found that a friend of a friend works in a local camera shop and he's willing to very cheaply rent me an extender for a couple of days, so I'm going to take him up on that and try it out, then I'll make a final decision.

ps, I have absolutely no idea what the tape trick is, care to enlighten me, please?

Re: Extenders

I also use a Kenko Pro 300 1.4 and find it very good. 2x converters generally start to loose a bit.

Understandable!

You put tape across a couple of pins on the TC which effectively prevents the TC informing the lens of it's existence (EXIF shows only the lens not the TC)
