Re: Extension Tubes.

Yup, extension tubes can be added to a macro lens for increased magnification. I use cheapo Chinese set (though still about £50) but did make sure it had metal mount as there's a fair bit of strain with a lens stuck on the end - and metal contacts to pass AF and exposure data to lens (not that I use AF but I do need different exposures!)

Cheers Mark is it right that you can also add a teleconverter as well to the extension tube?

Re: Extension Tubes.

I have some cheapo extension tubes but don't like them I use instead a raynox dcr-250 it's ace.... This is one of my best from last summer with the raynox....

Also you can use teleconvertor with this but probably not really needed the magnifician is pretty close at 1:1 with the raynox attached as you can see in the photo

Yup! Though DOF's getting very tight, so you may find you'd need the focus rail and/or flash

Re: Extension Tubes.

You definitely can use extension tubes or tcons with macro lenses to get more magnification but extension tubes actually work better with wide angle - standard focal length lenses in terms of magnification. As you ramp up the magnification a focusing rail is definitely a good idea but can slow you down in the field. Also light falls off a lot (It does anyway with macro lenses at minimum focus distances) so a flash helps sometimes.

Re: Extension Tubes.

Cheers guys like the look of that aidy, would suit me to as it just clips onto the front lens i take it, it also goes from 37mm to 49mm so would this make the view slightly smaller then compared to the 55mm

Twas a very DIY job and an utter nightmare to focus. I was using paper shims to adjust the focus and the merest hint of movement blew it completely. A focus rail would be very handy for such close up tasks

There should be no probs except IS probably won't work (IS/OS/VR don't really seem to like tubes)

Re: Extension Tubes.

Tubes work as Markulous said with most lenses. You do lose the ability to focus at distance. I like to carry one when I travel just in case as it's much lighter than carrying a macro.

Did you get planning permission for the 'assembly'
As they say, necessity is the mother of all invention.
