Extension Tubes and Canon 50mm

Hi,

I have been having a play with my extension tubes on my Canon 50mm. Problem is, I cannot get the camera to auto focus. The light just flashes and it wont let me take a picture. It works if I use the 75-300mm lens so not sure why not with the 50mm

Any thoughts?

Thanks
Paul

Re: Extension Tubes and Canon 50mm

Simple things first - do the tubes have contacts? If they don't then your camera can't communicate with the lens. Or, alternatively, it may be you are trying to focus within the lens' minimum focusing distance.

Re: Extension Tubes and Canon 50mm

yes - it has the contacts. As I said, it will autofocus with my 75-300mm lens.

I can manually focus with the 50mm and get the image in focus but just wondering why it wont autofocus

Re: Extension Tubes and Canon 50mm

I guess the question is whether it'll expose correctly, which is really all you need (I usually use MF with tubes/macro) but it does sound weird. Maybe worth cleaning all the contacts (in theory there's no reason for it not to work without contacts but think the camera "needs" to establish what lens is attached to AF)

the contacts or ok with the 50mm, it tries to auto focus but just doesn't give me the "Good to Go" light

Sounds like it can't get a reasonable contrast to establish a focus - but I guess you've tried it on all kinds of subjects

Re: Extension Tubes and Canon 50mm

Can only think that There is light fall off when using Kenko Auto Extension Tube, sometimes the equivalent of 3 f-stops of light is lost when using multiple extension tubes together. This light lost can affect the cameras ability to auto focus. Manual focusing is recommended should the lens begin to hunt (not lock onto the subject). applies in this case. But I'm surprised

Re: Extension Tubes and Canon 50mm

yeah that sounds like what its doing, looking for focus and not managing. I was inside at the time under artificial light. Maybe I will try outside tonight if its not raining and see what I get.

Oh - not sure if this make a difference but I was using two tubes totalling 52mm

Well, the greater the distance extended (i.e. more tubes) the more falloff in light. Artificial light is pretty dim so reckon this is the prob - should work outside with a bit of reasonable light
