Favorite WB on your SLR

I have been using the kelvin tempeture setting on my camera sence I started using an SLR. Why do you use the WB setting you use the most? And does anybody ever use the tint settings for WB?

A side note: my wife and I shoot a lot of the same places, she used AWB. She now uses Kelvin settings like me when she noticed how the tones of color are more consistant. Any thoughts?

Re: Favorite WB on your SLR

If you shoot in RAW the WB is determined by the converter (although it may default to the camera setting). I leave mine on AWB unless shooting under artificial light when I use Custom WB if possible - Canon cameras are hopeless at getting WB anywhere near right under tungsten or fluorescent light.

Usually cloudy for cycling, brings out the colours, or seems to for me. Again with RAW sort it out after. Have to say the AWB on the 1D is very good.

Use 2 settings most of the time think its round 5850k for landscape shots & then in the summer months use 6250k for me sea shots.

Re: Favorite WB on your SLR

Haa yes, custom WB,,And Whipspeed and Simpbow your close to my settings, 5700 + or -. Now when viewing my Raw files, I use the viewer on my machine after loading. I see the Jpeg rendering with the set WB. My pictures look relative to each other as color, so wouldn't this be good if I were shooting panoramas heading for a stitch, namely rendered blue skys looking much the same? I have seen a number of sets of pictures, shot with AWB and the blue sky's are all different, "to much work it seems" for ACR! The difference in sky color must be from AWB reading from different angles of light or lightness,.

Re: Favorite WB on your SLR

For panos you need to use exactly the same exposure and WB settings for all shots. You can set the WB on the camera to whatever is appropriate - but preferably *not* AWB in this case - or if shooting in RAW you can choose the same setting for each in the converter. (If you've fixed the WB on the camera, you can then select "As Shot" in the converter.)

Steve has done a very good tutorial here....

Re: Favorite WB on your SLR

Good link Silky, , Sorry to be so daffy about this, but wouldn't a set WB help with the sky if your shooting birds and the lighting is about the same for an hour or so? I mean without having to go to full manual settings, or am I just missing the point that the only way to ensure a constant sky color and brightness is to shoot full manual and not just let AV or TV and a WB preset do the work?

Re: Favorite WB on your SLR

Most cameras are good at setting the correct WB in daylight conditions if you use AWB. You should only need to fix the WB if you're shooting panos where each shot needs the same settings.

As for shooting birds against the sky, I'd always go for full manual exposure if there's time, since even the best auto-exposure systems can be fooled if the subject is relatively small and the background luminosity is significantly different. In these cases, treat the auto-exposure as a starting point (an exposure meter) and then use Manual.

There is no real advantage on trying to work with the tricky dealings of wb when awb is is alwys the best option, it is the most accurate setting on modern digital cameras

Re: Favorite WB on your SLR

It is always good to step back and rethink your creative habits, which is why I have brought up this question on WB. For me I shoot up more then down and the sky has always been the one constant that draws my attention when I say "is this what I wanted"? Lifethrualens, I have heard and read that AWB is pretty close to perfect, I will in a pinch if I don't have time or clue where to change my preset settings dial in AWB and go to town. All that said, any takers on what they do to have a set of pictures taken with in so many minutes of each other with matched tones in the sky?

Re: Favorite WB on your SLR

I generally use AWB and shoot in Raw.

I don't use a light meter - suppose i ought to get one - but do they give kelvin information? is there one that does that? if not a light meter, anyone know of anything that you can use to identify the kelvin setting in any given situation?

Re: Favorite WB on your SLR

Cloudy preset is about 6500 Kelvin, and would matter as a point of reference in a Raw converter in "as shot" data. When looking this up I found out that "candlelight" is between 1000-2000, out of reach of most Raw converters, but that is where my IR WB rests. You can thank Lord Kelvin for all of this

damot, if you do a googler search on Kelvin scale it pretty much explains it self, like the lower the light, lower the Kelvin #, or daylight around 5500. Get this, "blue skys" 8000-10,000.

Re: Favorite WB on your SLR

Messing with WB is a hassle SOMETIMES so generally it is easier to shoot in RAW or AWB for MOST shots. There is, whether you like it or not, always PS or Lightroom to help you correct things afterwards. I mean if you are a purist then you would want to do everything right IN CAMERA, but at the end of the day it jus depends on what you want. For me I want the piece of art and if I can do in PS what other would do anyways in the darkroom in the old days then it is fair game to me. Sometimes you don't have time when you take shot to mess around with too many variables on your camera, take the shot with what you have and work with it post production.

Re: Favorite WB on your SLR

PE, I wish when useing the expo disc you could get a reference reading as to what kelvin it sets your camera at.

The question on white balance came up with another photographer about keeping blue skys relatively the same color blue with in a short time and same radius area away from the sun. Shooting up at the sky at flying birds can give you different blues in the sky. I was hopeing that I would have a good direction to work as to how to control my camera in this kind of set up. White balance plays a role in keeping your color tones close and then exposure plays a role in keeping your luminance relatively the same. So manual mode should help with good results. All the responces have helped,,,any more?

AWB most of the time unless I'm shooting a running event (and in jpg) in which case we fix to either cloudy or sunny.

Oh and RAW all the way unless I'm machine gunning a sporting event
