Favour Please.

Would someone mind taking this blue image and firstly open it in Photoshop or a colour managed programme then open the same image in fax viewer or a web window.......then put the two side by side and tell me if they see a difference please.

Thanks Ian.

Re: Favour Please.

On my system it looks slightly brighter and more vibrant in the Web Browser and slightly more "purple" in CS3.

Not dramatically different though.

cheers

Cheers Dan

Yes I'm seeing slightly 'purple' in CS3 and can clearly see the difference.

I noticed some slight shifts in blue's today while editing some images

They just looked the same to me. If anything the CS2 version a tad more saturated, certainly no purple.

Re: Favour Please.

I've looked at it in Bibble, the GIMP and Paint Shop Pro and it looks exactly the same in those as on the web, Faststone and gThumb.

It shows as RGB (0, 32, 253) so shouldn't be looking purple.

Re: Favour Please.

Have you got any soft proofing switched on - I had (don't how long it's been like that ), I turned it off and now both images are the same.

My default RGB Working space is AdobeRGB, I convert to SRGB when I'me saving for the Web. If I'm working on 16-bit images for printing I tend to use ProPhotoRGB.

I have no idea why I do any of that except I read it in a book (Real World Photoshop CS2) and it seems to work for me.

cheers

Dan

Re: Favour Please.

I assume that you have Adobe Gamma unticked because you are using a monitor calibrator?

Your blue file does not have an attached colour profile so PhotoShop does not know how to deal with it. PS offers 3 options ignore colour management (I am not sure what it does then), asign the working colour space (Adobe RGB 1998 in my case) or assigning a new profile which you can select (I selected sRGB). I have looked at this with all three options and their is no significant difference by eye beyween them or with the Windows Picture and Fax viewer.

I do notice that on Photoshop the image shows as R=0, G=0, B=254 except if I convert it to sRGB when it R=0, G=0, B=249.

Did your picture start as sRGB?

The Windows Picture and Fax viewer does not read profiles but assumes that images are sRGB using the Window Colour Management Engine so it should display sRGB images resonably accurately (assuming you have a calibrated monitor). The fact that you see a big difference on PS does suggest a setting problem in Photoshop.

P.S> For what it is worth your middle Windows Picture veiwer version looks much the same as all my versions.

Re: Favour Please.

I have had a look and I get similar differences to you all when I compare the Windows & Fax viewer with adobe 7,Adobe Elements 5 and Micrografx Picture Publisher 10 Pro.
Now for what its worth I have tried to see what the differences are between the Windows viewer and all the other manipulation programs above by colour matching the two and to get the same colour and luminace as viewed side by side. This is what I found

1)The Windows viewer has a Profile of Lab Colour.
2) The Windows viewer has an Intent of Absolute Colorimetric.

All the others have ( well mine anyway)
1) Profile sRGB
2) Intent of Relative Colorimetric.
So its not surprsing that the Windows viewer has a "Vibrant Colour" compared to normal practices
Perhaps Mr Gates idea of making all viewed pictures a bit over the top to grab the non purists to use his viewer? Or am I being a little sinister!!!
I hope this helps a little.
Regards Brian.

Re: Favour Please.

Thanks for the informative replies

Well I've done a lot of installing and reinstalling

Since reformatting and installing CS3, Adobe Gamma is no longer loaded as I'm led to believe Adobe Gamma is no longer included with CS3.

BasICCare Team who write the Spectraview programmes more or less advised me that the colour in Photoshop would be correct (providing I have a decent monitor profile).

I found the following page helpful (Profiles & Windows), especially the sRGB image shown in Photoshop & IE;

Monitor Calibration
