The first thing I'd have to say Paul is that having looked at those example pics in the link, I don't see much wrong with the pics with no FEC. Where you use a fast flash speed indoors as the main source of illumination, the background is always going to be dark, as the auto flash kills the flash output as soon as the main subject is correctly exposed.

Far better to set expoure for the ambient light which will mean a slower flash sync speed, then pop up the flash. The camera then balances flash output with the ambient light so that both the subject and the surroundings are correctly exposed. This is called 'Slow Flash Sync'

I believe that many of the functions of the 10D are simply disabled in the 300D via software to justify the price differential, and I'm sure the same will be true of the 20D and the 350D. I'd be a bit wary of using unauthorised hacks on your camera as even the ones from the manufacturer are notorious for going wrong and ending in a locked-up camera.

There's a 'Slow Flash Sync' programme on the 20D, I don't know if you have one on the 300D?
