One reason - quality. I would not necessarily say that Jessop's filters are the best you can get, but they are more likely to be of reasonable quality compared to an unknown make from Hong Kong. There are plenty of places that sell branded filters at reasonable prices so I'd say the this would be the way to go, but remenber that there are lots of fakes out there, so if you keep to reputable retailers you should be OK.

Filter size governs the price, so make sure you are comparing like with like.

Re: filters

Hi Digimom and welcome to Pixalo.

I use Hoya which are superb but you may well get sold a fake from abroad.

I have also got a polarising filter manufactured by Kood which I have found to be equally as good as Hoya.
Another up and coming filter supplier in this country is Marumi.
I hope this helps

Re: filters

I use a Kood polorizer, and have some Kood skylight and UV too, and I've also got some Hi-Tec graduated NDs.

Hoya make several grades with the Pro-1 at the top of the tree (and about £150 for a 77mm one) but the middle grade ones are of good quality.

B&W and Lee are rated highly but are at the top end in terms of price too.

Whatever polorizer you buy, make sure it is a circular polorizer and not a linear one.
