Focal length with zoom

This one moved here from newbie forum.
Hello Everybody,
This is my first visit to this site and I have just registered for future viewing.
If I may I would like to ask the following question:-
I have been recommended to set 100mm for portraits and 38m for landscapes.
How do I know when zoom lens is set to these figures with my Fujinon 4x zoom,f2.8-f5.6 Many thanks in advance.

p.s. I am a complete newbie to digital, and still reading the camera manual

Re: Focal length with zoom

Hi thelamasman, and welcome.

Your camera is a digital compact, I think, so the focal length advice is a little misleading since that is aimed at full-frame (35mm film) cameras.

The f-numbers are aperture ranges and have nothing to do with focal length.

You will be able to zoom from fairly wide-angle to telephoto, and in general wide-angle is more useful for landscapes since (a) you get more in and (b) it can help to give a sense of size and scale to the image, whereas telephoto tends to compress everything.

Wide angle portraits are not, however, a good idea in general, since they exaggerated features and make everyone's nose look like Pinocchio. For portraits it is better to use something in the middle or the telephoto part of the zoom range.

Unfortunately on most compact cameras there are no focal length markings so you have to rely on judgment as to where you are in the zoom range. As long as you stick to the general principles I mentioned above, you'll be OK - there are no hard-and-fast rules.

Hope that helps, and please ask if you're unsure about anything.

Thumbs up Re: Focal length with zoom

Silkstone,
thanks for your prompt reply.
You are correct, my camera is a Fuji Finepix F810 compact.
The manual states it is 7.2mm - 28.8mm(Eq. to approx 32.5 - 130mm)
Having reread this in my manual and looked again at the recommandation I was given of 100mm & 38mm, and now with your advice , I believe I now understand my own question.
So once again, thanks, all I need now is to find the time to put it in to practice.
