Focus test

This is a quick focus test from my latest D300.
The focus point is the eye centre.
The lens is at 70mm wide open, hand held at 1/80 s.
This is at the lens' minimum focus distance.
It is a 100% crop (I think)

Does anyone feel the image is in acceptable focus?

Re: Focus test

This chart might be useful to see what the theory says.

You can select your camera and lens focal length.

Only problem I can see is that the actual DoF does not say what units it is measured in. 70mm, range 1 metre at f4 = near .99, far 1.02, but is that metres or millimetres?

I can't see it being metres, so it looks like 3mm DoF.

Re: Focus test

You say it was hand held at 1/80th. In that case it looks very good to me. I assume that it has VR turned on. For a focus test it should really have been on a tripod

Re: Focus test

Further to my last post, this chart gives the DoF at 0.09 at 2 metres.

I used 105mm lens in 35mm format as there seems not to be a crop factor digital format.

On the strength of these two charts, it would appear that your shot is within tolerance.

Re: Focus test

Thanks for looking all.

As a point of little interest, it is the non vr 18-70 kit lens.

I'll go along with the DOF chart as it looks about 3 ish mm to me.

I still feel the actual shiny surface of the eye is marginal but that could be down to eye movement given the shutter speed is only just above the rule, and I don't have the steadiest hand in the world.

Re: Focus test

Looks good to me .The spot on focal points to me appear to be anything thats on the same distance as the corner of the eye, hence to surface of the eyeball is a tad out.The centre eye lashes are extending further than the corner ones so become slightly OOF.
On a technical point I would rate this shot as being 99.99% for the lens. I don't think you would get much better that what you have achieved Soup. Possibly your nickname could become "Steady Hand Soup"

Thanks for the reassuring comments!

I guess if I stopped down to f8, all would be much better!

Re: Focus test

That's true, the 18-70 is much sharper stopped down a couple of stops, so it would look even better, but tbh there isn't anything wrong here either...

Re: Focus test

I just realised I can see myself in the reflection.

Perhaps this should be moved to the mugshots section?

Cool, I tend to be a bit paranoid about my stuff, especially within the first 28 days of ownership (here come the puns).

Re: Focus test

If you want to test your focus I can heartily recommend the link below (which I believe was in turn provided to me by someone on this site). This will allow you to check the forward and back focus of your camera / lens.

Nikon D70 Focus Chart

Ignore what it says about Nikon D70 - this works for any SLR camera / lens.
