Freelance Photographers Market Handbook 2008

I bought this book today and I think its going to be my bible for the next year. For those who dont know, it gives the names and contact addresses of most, if not all, magazines, national newspapers and trade publications in the UK. By contact addresses, I mean picture editors emails and telephone numbers too.

Does anyone have any experience/luck/success using this guide to sell their images.

I, as I am sure most people, would be grateful to know.

I have 2006, to be honest I had limited success but it depends on your area some specialist mags are more up for taking on new freelancers or images than others, also some of the contact details go out of date fairly quickly.

I think maybe a problem is that the people in the books now are inundated with everyone whos bought it emailing or contacting them with work. I do however have contacts for farming mags etc which I wouldnt have even looked at doing before so good for future work most likely.

The agricultural/farming photography is what I want to do, so share your contacts..go on, dont be selfish!

Just kidding but by posting what you have, its reinforced my inclination to contact the trade mags and almost "niche" sectors to get contacts. As I am just starting out now, I just want my name out there as I havent had any published work yet - in some regards, its less important than money (unless some tabloid wants to give me a grand for my pic of Peaches Geldof pulling a funny face!)

I am starting to see that when it comes to commercial publications, its about contacts as much, if not more than, your skills as a photographer or journalist.

I could be talking tosh but I am blessed with inexperience so my eyes are wide open!

Be careful not to give too much for free, as is said a lot on here and other forums if you are seen as the person who does things for nothing, its a hard label to drop.

However it doesnt have to be money, by approaching the smaller concerns, regional mags say you can always go with images for a free advertisement, also keep your ear to the ground for new magazines these will be better than the already established who will have thier band of photographers.

I use the book for all my contacts and have found it very good, more than paying for it's nominal cost.

I had to get a couple of jobs under my belt before even getting an answer for most, but that may well be that my approach needed tweaking lol

Your right Summer about getting a tag for free work "stills and video", I helped out a friend 4 years ago who is a member of a clown group who raises money. I felt it would be good to help out a good cause, besides great pic's of colorful clowns. My pic's are still on their web sites,,,I learned later that they were pocketing extra money,,,I put in a lot of work and was asked over and over to be here and there for "no maus". pooh,,,,that's what I say.
At the time I was try'n to see if I could make a little pocket change,,

I still helped put a smile on a lot of kids faces.

Really though Ian, you will find it very usefull, and what always surprises me is the diversity of photographs that are required.

lol Glad I don't go to sheffield much, other wise i can imagine the scene of Sims style scrapping at all the events!
