Glider flight, which lens ?

I WILL SHORTLY BE TAKING A TRIP IN A GLIDER, WHICH MY DAUGHTER WON IN A COMPETITION.
I WANT TO GET SOME SHOTS, BUT AS THERE IS LIMITED SPACE IN A GLIDER, I AM WONDERING WHICH LENS WOULD BE THE BEST FOR ME TO USE FOR ARIEL SHOTS.

I HAVE A TAMRON 18-270, SIGMA 50MM, SIGMA 10-20MM, CANON 85MM OR USE MY CANON G10.

ANY HELP AND ADVICE MUCH APPRECIATED

MANY THANKS

Re: Glider flight, which lens ?

I'd take the 18-270 to give you the best options. The only thing to check is how much room you have. I found that sitting in a 4 seat Cessna I was touching the side windows (on 'my' side) using a Sigma 18-200. I don't think the 10-20 would be any good. Maybe the G10 will give you the best result.

Of the primes I'd suggest the 50mm.

Here are some shots taken from the Cessna. The EXIF is in them so you can see what focal lengths I was using from around 2000 feet. I think that they are from 18mm to 100mm in the main.

Grease Spot should be able to give better advice if he sees this.

Re: Glider flight, which lens ?

As Graham says plus.....glider canopies aren't the clearest of mediums and the only time you'll get the opportunity to shoot down is when the glider is turning.

THANK YOU GRAHAM & STEPHENO, FOR YOUR ADVICE. I THINK IT IS GOING TO BE TRIAL AND ERROR, I THINK I WILL PROBABLY JUST TAKE THE G10.

Re: Glider flight, which lens ?

Personally, I'd probably take my G11 (so for you the G10) - perfectly respectable shots from a flexible, relatively small-sized camera

There again, I'd probably wimp out anyway (not great with heights) - though if you're talking helicopters that's a different matter (which I love having had a great time many moons ago in Canada - really wild bush pilots!)

Re: Glider flight, which lens ?

I now the images might be pants and its not realy a dslr comment.

If its a once in a life time thing. ask if they provide a head cam. If not
one can be picked up cheaply. then you end up with a video record of
your day.

Have a great day.

Re: Glider flight, which lens ?

Well done to your daughter for winning the flight.

I agree with using the G10, not just for space in the cockpit, but being light it is easy to manoeuver. You will most likely be in the front seat with the instructor in the back. Try shooting out of the car windscreen while being driven along one of the Sussex country lanes. Holding a heavy SLR steady for a long period becomes heavier. There is the added risk that in turbulence it is not easy to control. As Mark pointed out the G10 will give 'perfectly respectable' results and being lighter will allow you to more enjoy the flight - which hopefully will be at least 20 minutes. From experience most people tend to like to look around a lot during their first flight in a glider, because so much can be seen from a relatively low height. As such, using a head-cam, although a good idea that leaves your hands free, might be a disappointment if you are not used to using one.

I guess you will be going to either Parham or Lasham. Parham uses the South Downs to soar along, so if your flight is there then try to make sure you get there on a day with a North wind, as with a northerly, the chance is you might get a longer flight. No wind needed at Lasham. Wrap up warm, as airfields can be deceptively colder than expected, and you might find yourself waiting a while for a flight.

Have fun and hope you enjoy it

Ask if you can wingwalk, then space won't be an issue and you will get lovely clear shots

Re: Glider flight, which lens ?

I did some training at Tangmere, a loooonng time ago ... anywhere near you? You will not be disturbed then, by wearing a 'chute in the glider - for comfort you understand , as the seats are scalloped for 'chutes.

Re: Glider flight, which lens ?

THIS WAS THE LAST JUMP I DID AT HEADCORN, ABOUT 22 YEARS AGO, UNFORTUNATELY, HAD AN ACCIDENT NOT LONG AFTER THIS, LOST MY RIGHT ARM, SO WAS NO LONGER ABLE TO JUMP.

TANGMERE IS ABOUT 45 MILES FROM US.

GRAHAM, I WILL NOT BE WORRIED AT ALL ABOUT WEARING A CHUTE, IT WILL BE SECOND NATURE TO ME, AS I HAVE DONE IN THE REGION OF 3000 JUMPS

Ouch!! That sounds a horrible accident. Nice memorial photo. Headcorn was a great little private strip, must be nearly 20years since I last visited. Hope the weather keeps good for your flight!

Re: Glider flight, which lens ?

Proud moment. Recollections of some good times, I think.

I've just checked Parham has and I know Lasham has a K21 which will be easier for you to get in and out of. It is also fully aerobatic and with your experience you might enjoy a more fun flight if you ask. (You definitely will not need the 7D for this : = 5Kg in a loop ). Just make sure an instructor with aerobatic endorsement and the aircraft are available: gliders are taken out of service once a year for maintenance, usually for a couple of weeks during the winter. It could help to call beforehand to check.

It would be the 18-270 for me but if your Compact gives top quality results I would be tempted with that too! after saying that if this weather don't improve you must pack a roll of loo paper as well........

3000 jumps! Wow. And there's me not even wanting to board a plane - let alone jump out of one.

Have fun when the flight takes place - and don't forget to post some shots up.
