Gliding

A bunch of my colleagues are going gliding at London Gliding Club tomorrow night.

Having never been to one of these events, is it a good photo op?

Any ideas or advice appreciated.

Re: Gliding

Probably better from the air itself or from a hill above the gliders, supposed to be great fun though and I'd love to have a go

Re: Gliding

Are you going gliding or just going along to see what it is all about?

Re: Gliding

I can probably get up to Dunstable Downs. I had already thought this, it would mean I can pics with land instead of sky behind the glider.

Re: Gliding

Well I am also afraid of heights but i don't mind flying, never been in a glider though.

I would have thought that taking your camera with you would be a 'no brainer', if you get a nice sunset as well you could get some great shots. I have photographed gliders both on the ground and in the air and they do offer great subject matter (i'll see if I can dig up a picture).

I would say give it a go, you have nothing to lose

Re: Gliding

Yeah, I'm defo gonna take the camera (and the long lens ). I just have no idea what I'm going to get. Im tempted to go up to Dunstable Downs to get soem shots with land in the background rather than sky.

The thing is, will I be able to see the people in the glider? If I cant then it might as well be anyone, if you see what I mean?

Re: Gliding

You should be able to depending on your location, I parked myself under the runway approach for a while and managed to get shots with the pilot looking at me as they were comming in to land.

I have not uploaded any of those though so these will have to do for now

Sometimes catching them on the ground with good lighting or in an unusal postion can be very effective.

HTH

Re: Gliding

Thats pretty impressive Joe

It seems that you had perfect weather and from that one shot alone your trip was worth it.

I am looking forward to seeing the rest now

And:

There's plenty more, but they tend to be people shots and I dont want to post them on here to respect their privacy.

Not as good as the first I posted, but I hope you like.

Re: Gliding

The first one you posted is the strongest closely followed by the first one in the second post, both of these are backed by the dramatic sky which adds that extra dimension and makes them stand out. I have to say that the fist photo in your last post is my favourite from the lot though, the way that you caught the glider just before touchdown with the fields in the background seemingly going on up to the top of the frame gives it a great different perspective. Add in the clarity of the people in the glider and that they are smiling makes this a great shot overall.

The big question is…are you going to go back and will you be going up next time?

Re: Gliding

Thanks for your comments Steve.

The only slight problem with the first one in the last post is that it's almost a 100% crop.... The original doesnt look too bad, but it doesnt have the impact.

The very first one I posted I am really liking, and am considering getting a large print (photobox offer) as its almost uncropped.

Re: Gliding

Great pictures, Joe. I can see the downs from my house, and one of my Sons used to be the assistant pro at the golf course at the top of the downs, so I've seen pleanty of gliders over the years. Never had the urge to photograph them until I saw your shots.
