Golf photography...

Hey folks,

I am going to be going to the Scottish Open golf at Loch Lomond in the summer and I am hoping that by then I will have a telephoto (at least 200mm) lens to take some shots of the players around the course.

Has anybody else done this kind of thing before and are there any tips that could be passed on to me?

I currently dont own one but should I look to invest in a monopod for this? Benbo Trekker monopods are less than 30 and may be a good investment.

Thanks all.

Re: Golf photography...

Remember if you are going to be taking shots from fairly short range, you will probably want to use portrait format, (at least some of the time) so a monopod might not be of value in these situations when you want to have maximum mobility. I have never got on with trying to use a ball head with a monopod.

I think a monopod is a good investment anyway, but they do have their limitations.

Try these for starters:

Golf Tips | Photography - 'Be the ball!'
Tips From the First Tee: The "secrets" to successful golf photography

I've shot in portrait using the ability of the tripod collar on my lenses to turn through 90.

Practise timing and don't shoot before they hit the ball - I've had the death stare!!!

Hi i went to the open last year in Hoylake i heard after that they wont be allowing cameras and phones into the tournaments anymore. Got a few pics of some pro's including seve ballesteros (if thats spelt right) who kept popping in and out of the clubhouse right past me. John Daly who was a bit grumpy and a few other who's names ive forgotton. A few also possed for me with my youngest lad.

Re: Golf photography...

You will be able to take a camera on practice days but once the competition starts properly (usually on the Thursday) cameras are banned. I went to the AMEX WGC at The Grove last year on a practice day and they confiscated phones even then!

You will probably need at least 200mm and a monopod should help. Here are a few from the day:

And finally Colin Montgomery picking his nose, he heard the shutter fire and I was on the wrong end of a 'Monty Glare'!
