Cool Goodbye 10D...

There are days I really love my missus...

After contacting a Canon repair centre I discovered that it was going to cost 165 plus shipping for a fixed price repair to my 10D. Faced with the prospect of shelling out almost 200 on a camera body that only cost me that much in the first place (second hand of course) I was wandering around the house feeling suitably sorry for myself.

My dear wife insisted that rather than spend more money on repairing an old camera I should just go out and buy myself a new one. After reluctantly allowing myself to be persuaded I placed an order for a brand new EOS 40D which I expect to be picking up later today!!

I think I had better start planning now for the next wedding anniversary, birthday, next year's valentines day and so on. I have some serious payback to earn! In the interim I get a nice new camera to play with!

Re: Goodbye 10D...

Haven't had much chance to do anything with it yet, aside from sticking screen protectors onto it, setting the custom functions up, then a quick walk around the garden for a few reference snaps. First thing that struck me was the size of the screen on the back which looks huge after the 10D. It feels rubbery to grip and nice and secure to hold. Most of the rest of the bits are in the same place as on the 10D although the menu system is much closer to my 400D. Did I mention that wonderful big screen on the back? Focussing is spot on, and the speed of the shutter is really quite amazing. Going from the 400D to the 10D felt like a step up but the 40D is just incredible. And then when you want to preview the images there is that huge great screen on the back, or did I already say something about that?

As luck would have it we are on holiday in Wales all next week (not too far from Cardigan) so I should be able to come back with a nice collection of new images and the camera properly bedded in.

Colour me one happy camera owner

I really like the screen on the back as well.

Re: Goodbye 10D...

Argh I'm jealous. I was undecided between the 400D and the 40D.. Even though I loved the feel of the 40D I decided on the former due to a good deal. I can't help wondering how long it will take before I absolutely have to get the 40D!!
Have fun with it!

Re: Goodbye 10D...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Don't tell me that lol

In reality, I keep saying to myself that I made a good choice on the body, it's just the lens that I'm going to upgrade. As mentioned on the 'Classified Ads' area, if anyone has a standard zoom for a canon, 17-85 IS preferably, let me know (Larne are you selling your kit lens for the 40D or did you get body only?)

At the risk of causing a slight thread drift Larne, do you have any useabililty tips for the 400D? Not general photography help, just things you have noticed about the 400D and ways to imrpove use.

Cheers

Re: Goodbye 10D...

I went body only on the 40D as I already have most of the lenses that I need.

Regarding tips, nothing to say really. It's a great camera and I would still be using it if I didn't need the speed of use that comes with a semi-pro body. Main comment I guess is that the images do really benefit from unsharp mask before you look at them closely. The initial image (I have always shot in RAW) does seem very soft but the unsharp really snaps it into detail.

Biggest advantage of the 400D is weight and size. My 8-year-old son is using it a lot at the moment and he really struggles with the weight and size of the 10D/40D.

Unless you get to the point where you are needing to shoot lots of images quickly then I think you will be fine staying with the 400D. If you have the extra money then spend it on lenses.
