Graphic Tablet

I have never bothered investing in one of these Graphic Tablets and have very little knowledge of them

With Christmas fast approaching I keep getting asked 'Is there anything I would like for Christmas' ......so I thought maybe it's time to see if these Graphic Tablets are any good.

So which one is recommended for a novice like me........I have had a quick read in the review section.

Re: Graphic Tablet

i have a graphire wacom A6 which is absolutely brillinat and u will never ever go back to a mouse for editing. it sometimes takes a wee while to get use to using it and there are a very small amount of people who ust cant take to them ( i dont know how)
the one i have comes with a cordless mouse and a pen and holder, you can put a photo of your choice on the tablet itself under the plastic. its plug and play and although you can change the button uses on the pen i never have done anything to it as i find it works well as it comes. the pen has an eraser end as well ust like a pencil and rubber. which is great cos it saves u having to go to eraser to sort anything.
Cant rate this highly enough, not sure how much it cost as it was a pressie....... but it does come with a 2 year unlimited warranty. i have had it probably 2 years in march with absolutely no problems whatso ever. i will say that an A6 may seem too small but in reality the bigger the tablet the more work you have to do in moving across it !

Re: Graphic Tablet

the tablet itself comes with a tranparent hard plastic covering that stays on but can clip off so you can place a photo underneath it. it then clips back on and holds the photo inplace.

Re: Graphic Tablet

yes it is, the picture u have on your tablet has no correlation ( posh word) to what you are working on as you dont "look" at the tablet when u are working you are looking at the screen

Re: Graphic Tablet

If you have read the review that I wrote, you'll have seen that I rate the Trust as really good VFM, but I accept that the Wacom is probably the best tablet. from memory, 59 v 150 for the A4 size.

Once I made up my mind that I could not justify the cost of the Wacom (yet) and I wanted to just try out a tablet, I was very unsure of what size to get. I could not find anywhere that had tablets set up to try, so I wondered if the larger size would mean easier intricate working, on the grounds that any given movement of the stylus would equate to a leisurely movement on the screen (like a mouse with the tracking speed set low) and conversely, a small (A6) tablet making fine control tricky for the opposite reason. The advantage with my A4 tablet is that I can reduce the size of the working area, so can optimise the hand/screen ratio to what I want. Also the A4 tablet is not much bigger than the A5.

Having said all that, I think the A5 size would be OK (Trust A5 was about 37 on Amazon) especially if you only want to have a go to evaluate using a tablet. I'm less sure that I'd want an A6 size.

It will be interesting to see what others opinions are, and if they agree with my thoughts on the size issue.

Re: Graphic Tablet

You definitely do NOT want an A4 tablet, they are a flipping nightmare for photo editing as you have to move your hand around all over the place.

I wouldn't even bother with an A5 as the A6 is more than adequate for such work. Larger tablets are for graphics work, i.e. creating graphics per se and professionals doing that often have huge monitors and things, like 30 inches!

The best value in terms of cost and quality is definitely the Wacom Graphire 4 which is purpose designed for photo editing work and the A6 size means you can reach anywhere on the screen accurately and with finger control rather than having to move your arm around. I know a couple of professionals with an A5 tablet because they use it for other things but other than that, every professional who uses it entirely for photographic post-pro work that I know of sticks to the A6 size.

The Graphire 4 Model 440 comes as a tablet and a pad, the model 460 comes with a mouse as well. You don't have to gt the mouse as you can use your ordinary mouse if you prefer but if you want the mouse, it can either be bought with the higher model or separately for under 20 which then works seemlessly along side the graphics pen.

The only difference of any note between Graphires and the considerably more expensive Intuos models is the pressure sensitisation: on the G4 it is 512 levels of pressure sensitivity whereas the Intuos has 1024. Again, you do not need that level for photo-editing so it isn't a factor to worry about.

The bit about putting a hoto under the plastic cover on the digipad is a bit of a red herring really. All that means is if you want to trace an object onto the screen, you can put a picture under the plastic and trace over it to put it into the computer. I have tried it a couple of times and frankly it's a dead loss! Definitely not something I would ever bother with. If you really must use it, stick a picture of your cards under it so you have a personalised mouse mat :o)

A G4 without mouse will only cost you about 75 if you buy brand new from somewhere like WarehouseExpress.com but you can buy it cheaper online from Ebay. However, it is worth bearing in mind there is one that is half the price but still Wacom quality called the Wacom PenPartner2 which is only 37.95 and sstill gives you an A6 area and 512 levels of pressure.

If you want and need the Photoshop Elements software, you can get a very good deal as for 110, an extra 35 from the Graphire 4, you can get the version with Elements 3. Ok, it isn't the latest version but it is plenty to get started if you don't have anything good for post-pro work.

So, what are you wanting for. Start writing that letter to Santa :o)

Cheers,
Rob

Re: Graphic Tablet

Very intererting comments (as always) from Rob. If I'd have known that when i was buying, maybe I would have gone for the A6 wacom. Having said that, I can reduce the working area down to A6 (steplessly, if that is a word), so maybe I've got the best of both worlds?

Fi - the idea behind the transparent overlay on the tablet is not so you can have a piccy of your nearest and dearest in two places (if you count your wallpaper), it is to enable you to be able to trace a photo, outline or picture onto your computer.

Re: Graphic Tablet

That is an interesting facility Dab, I must confess I wasn't aware of that so yes, it would prove useful. Does it give you an overlay so that you can see on the pad which area is being used when using A5 or A6?

I don't know what you have found with the build quality of your Trust tablet but that was the main reason I avoided one this time round. I had a Trust digital pen and tablet about 4 years ago and it was more plasticky than Michael Jackson's face! It felt very cheap and cheerful in my hand, especially the pen. It DID work fine but I just didn't like its feel and eventually got rid (gave it to my son who only needed it for occasional use) and got myself the Graphire 3. This has always felt a real quality piece of kit and is still working properly now, even though tomorrow should see the delivery of my nice new Graphire 4. Why? Just because my Graphire 3 is getting a bit worn, showing signs of wear if not tear.... a bit like me really!

Btw, once my Graphire 4 arrives, I will probably be willing to give this Graphire 3 away to anyone willing to pay the postage so if there is anyone out there interested, it will probably cost me a fiver to post. I'll stick it in the Classifieds section on Pixalo as soonas my other one is installed and working. There is nothing functionally wrong with it at all, just a bit grubby. Anyway, if nobody wants it, it will go to the great dust-gathering cupboard where it will sit until I get fed up of the site of it and chuck it!

Atthe moment, it will be the pen and pad only (it's a USB connection) but not the mouse. I am hoping the mouse will work on the G4 to save my forking out for a new one. If it doesn't, the mouse will go with it.

I don't know what colours others come in, I know the G4 I am getting is white. My G3 is a dark blue with light grey sides, mouse and pen. Frankly, as long as it works and fits on my desk, I couldn't care less what colour it is. Well, hang on, I say that but if it was pink I would definitely heave it through the nearest window! I HATE PINK!!!

Ok, I'll be reviewing my new G4 as soon as it is installed and I have chance to try it all out.

Cheers,
Rob

Manual!! Wow, I knew there had to be another reason for going for the Wacom!!

Rob, the Trust does not have a 'size guide' on the tablet, but I don't find that is is a problem. I would agree with everything you've said (again) regarding the Wacom being the Daddy, but I am pleased with the Trust tablet and find it good enough for my needs at the moment. The build quality is OK. Yes, it is plastic, but it does not feel flimsy or cheap. The pen is a little unbalanced, but again, to find out if you like/dislike using tablets, the VFM is excellent, and now I find i like tablets, it is still good enough.

I may well move to a Wacom when this one fails/wears out, but I'm not wishing I bought a Wacom in the first place, if you see what i mean.

Re: Graphic Tablet

Completely agree Dab, wasn't suggesting you should change at all, just that people looking to buy a new one would be best considering a Wacom for the quality. One question, does your Trust pen use a battery? That is usually what causes them to feel a bit unbalanced. Because Wacom uses a different system, there are no batteries in the mouse or in the pen, they just activate as soon as they are within 1 centimentre of the digipad surface. Hence the pen is lighter and more balanced.

I am glad you are happy with yours and yes it is a good way to try it out for sure.

Angela, i have noted you are the first to express an interest in my graphics pen and tablet so as soon as my new one arrives and is installed and working, I'll give you first refusal on it :o)

Cheers,
Rob :o)

Yes Rob, they do have a battery. That in itself would not be too much of a problem, as it's an AAA, but, annoyingly, it's in the top half of the pen, and it is this that makes the balence a little top heavy. I could re-balance the pen fairly easily, but can't be bothered!

The Wacom is a much better design.

Re: Graphic Tablet

When I was looking, I think Staples listed them and Amazon. Also try Rymans.
