Graphics Tablets - Do You (can you) use one?

I have owned a Graphics tablet for many years but apart from an initial attempt I failed to used my first budget Wacom tablet. 12 months ago I thought I would make more effort as many image editors find them to be very useful. I bought a larger sized Wacom Bamboo pen & touch which initially caused my computer to crash. It took months to sort out but it now works reliably. The problem is that I still find it easier to use a mouse. I am forcing myself to use the tablet for editing images but often revert to the mouse for more difficult areas. Part the problem is that I have used a mouse for almost 30 years and now rarely use a pen.

Should I persevere with the pen & tablet? Any tips on how I could improve my skills in using the pen & tablet.

Re: Graphics Tablets - Do You (can you) use one?

I've got a tablet, but don't use it a lot. When I did use it a lot, I used it in conjunction with the mouse as I don't see it as a replacement for a mouse. I know others will disagree here.

I find the tablet far superior for fine detailed work or for doing some aspects of skin improvements in portraits, and have seen a pro using one to retouch pictures in bulk, spending about 10 seconds on each one and this certainly would not be possible with a mouse.

You might be in the same camp as me in that your photography - or what you do to your images in PP - is less suited to a tablet. Like everything else, the more you use it the easier it is, and you will then use it more.

Re: Graphics Tablets - Do You (can you) use one?

The main reason I use a graphics tablet is the third dimension - pressure - which you cannot get with a mouse. Agility in the fingers or wrist is purely personal but I prefer to 'draw' and to use pressure, than to select and multiple click. I guess it depends on your work flow - rather like being minimal with layers or using several, which I find I would have to do if only using a mouse.

Had a thought to add to this - what about the new way of working - anybody had any difficulties working with gestures on the newer OSs ? (keep it clean )

Re: Graphics Tablets - Do You (can you) use one?

Agree heavily with both the above. I have a mask addiction, pressure and ease of use is in he hand is a natural feeling. I have to work with the preferences on pen control to get the right feel. I have had a pen for a long time and on my 3rd one. Use both a wireless mouse to compliment it. It takes work to master the feel and after a while it should just fall into your flow. I have always used a square one and now use a wide tablet which is much better, also is the feel of the pen,,it just feels right.

Re: Graphics Tablets - Do You (can you) use one?

I have both an old RS232 wacom tablet bought in 1997 and a Bamboo Fun i bought 2 years ago. I don't use it as much as I thought I would, but definitely like it for making masks. I can't use it as a mouse replacement personally.

Plus my use of dual displays makes it kind of a pain, as the software maps out both screens onto the tablet space, making both screens really small and twitchy on the tablet... So when I am using it, I generally disable my second display, do my work and then plug my other display back in.

For what it's worth though, I wouldn't not have it, despite how I have to use it..

What I really want is a Cintique. a nice big cintique.. though I'd probably go for the 13 inch one as a tradeoff. I can't justify one though..

I quit using the RS232 serial wacom because in their infinite wisdom, Wacom made the mac drivers so they wouldn't recognize them even with a usb->RS232 dongle or on an RS32 card in a mac pro. There are third party drivers but they are buggy.. I get it. They'd like to make money. But that old tablet is still supported under Windows..

Lcraft, you make a good point in that I also use dual monitors and the graphics tablet maps both. Turning one off I can see would remap but would defeat the object of having a dual display.

Love my graphics pad, only have an old cheapie, but never use a mouse now at all. I'm left handed & not sure if it makes a difference, but I find a pen much easier.

Re: Graphics Tablets - Do You (can you) use one?

i never ever use anything but a tablet when editing, i cant use a mouse to edit its just not precise enough. I do however only use an A6 tablet as Im lasy and the bigger the tablet the further you have to move your hand and arm. I am on tablet number 3 as i wear them out lol this one has no lights left working but everything else works

At least there is someone else like me!

To be fair, it just does not seem natural to me drawing with a pen now. The fact is over the last 15 years, I have used a mouse considerably more than a pen(pencil or any equivalent). I cannot seem to draw an accurate curve with a pen now though I can with a mouse; it may be an age effect.

Re: Graphics Tablets - Do You (can you) use one?

Lcaft mentioned the problem of using a graphics tablet with two monitors which made me more aware that this was seriously limiting my use of the graphics tablet which may be part the reason why I am not taking to it. The graphics tablet maps to the combined two monitors so, if just editing on one, you have effectively a half sized graphics tablet. What is worse is that if you draw a circle with the pen an ellipse is traced due to the mapping stretching over two screens. This certainly explains why I could draw more accurately with a mouse than the pen.

So I decided that others must have already solved this problem and discovered many complex solutions for non-Wacom tablets but for a modern Wacom tablet the Wacom settings has a the ability to change the mapping. In my case choosing Bamboo preferences I selected the "Pen" tab then clicked the "Mapping" button. This had defaulted to "All Screens" but options included setting each of the individual monitors separately or even selecting a limited area. I have now selected "Monitor 1" which is the monitor I actually use for image editing and the tablet now maps just to that monitor. If I did need to transfer the tablet to the other monitor, it takes but a few seconds to change. If I now draw a circle I get a circle

I am surprised that I did not notice this before but that is how these forums can be so useful with Lcraft's helpful comment leading to a solution.

I think it is one of those things you either love or hate. I bought a Wacom about eight years ago used it a few times but we did not get on well at all so it has been in the office drawer ever since [I think} The mouse and I get on ok.

Re: Graphics Tablets - Do You (can you) use one?

old topic being dredged up..

POWER LINES...

masking power lines is painful with a mouse. tolerable with a tablet. There is a learning curve of applying a touch in position X, while watching for the change in Position Y and the relative motion. it's still better than a mouse..

BUT IT IS ABSOLUTELY ENJOYABLE on a Cintique. I had the privilege of borrowing a 22" Cintique from a customer of mine who was going on vacation and wouldn't be using it for a couple weeks... It would seriously change how my desktop would need setting up.. I'd probably dispatch one of my extra displays and put the Wacom cinqitue on an easel where I could get to it easy.. I might even put it on an arm that could swing out in front of me over my mouse and keyboard..

but masking those power lines.. an absolute breeze with the cintique and being able to edit directly on the screen with a pen.. it has ruined me on all other methods.. My heart wants the big one but I'm probably going to end up with the small one..

Re: Graphics Tablets - Do You (can you) use one?

Have you tried the spot healing brush using content aware? Don't be fooled by the name - you can click and drag this tool using the mouse and power lines vanish in seconds.

Depending on the background you can do it in one hit or in sections, and if it does not do a good job you can often improve it by changing the brush size and going back to try again.

Sure have - and it's a lot like the spot healing tool in Lightroom. very powerful.

Drawing a line directly on what you want with a pen on a display though is also super powerful and creates a superior interface to the software is all I'm saying. I suspected it would be good, but after I had some alone time with the Cintique, was a true believer..

Re: Graphics Tablets - Do You (can you) use one?

For lines and the spot healing brush, you can place a spot at one end and holding shift click at the other end and the entire line is removed. This is very useful for removing straight lines. I know not all power lines are straight though. This works for both LR and PS.

I have continued to use my Graphics Tablet and have reached a compromise. I normally just use it when drawing round objects (e.g. people) to extract them to place on a different background. As I use Topaz ReMask 5, I only have to draw roughly. So I still only use the Tablet for a very small percentage of my editing

Re: Graphics Tablets - Do You (can you) use one?

I see Wacom has taken out the middle man and is selling computer tablets now with a new advanced pen. all flash based, in various configurations ranging up to $3000.. Run windows 10. in i5 an I7 configurations.

they look like wonderful machines.. impractical for me, as I need a laptop that can work as a desktop..
