Has anyone ever seen a ...

Jewel wasp? I saw something that was totally stunning flying around the brickwork at my front door. I've paid attention to insects and wildlife in general and never seen one of these before. Easily the most stunning insect I've ever set eyes on.

I've spent about three hours today searching through the internet and finally found a couple of pictures of what I saw. Unfortunately because I only have macro tubes and the wasp wasn't staying put for a single second (seriously flighty it was), there was no chance I was going to get a shot of it with my camera focusing about 2" from the front of the lens. This has just hardened my resolve to go get a decent AF macro lens.

Anyway, here are a couple of pictures that I found online. The second one is more like the rear end colour of the one I saw but the first shows it as bright as it was. I can't think of a more aptly named insect. It was positively shining. Has anyone else seen these in the UK? Or in Scotland? Surely global warming can't be bringing things like this up here? I mean, it was frosty a week or so ago.

I can see where it gets its name from a most impressive insect. One question where is "here" you do not have your location showing.

Have a look here Flickr: "jewelwasp"

lots of sightings, and they often give location data on Flickr.

also found a video which shows these species in a somewhat different light :-)

Beautiful, but would you want to meet one in a dark alley LOL

Wow, I did read somewhere that its sting punched way above its weight. Astonishing what nature comes up with isn't it?

Correct re the structure. It is the basic structure of a large class of dyes that I spent and long and enjoyable time working on. The blue smoke colour used by the Red Arrows is one of these.

Where can I get some of these wasps. I know a few hotels where I could make a fortune selling these wasps in the lobby.
