Have to tell someone!

As many of you already know, I am a novice. I have yet to buy a quality photo production software to help my enjoyment of the hobby. So here is what happened today. I walked into our new offices and walk by the cubicle that is storing all the spare computer paraphernalia and there is a Photoshop CS2 box sitting there doing nothing. Mind you, there is not one photographer in our organization (education firm) besides the new admin assistant who took a few classes in college. I asked the simple question, "Can I have this?" And the answer, "Sure!" I now own it for free! I just need to come up with the coin for the upgrade for CS3. I had to tell someone because my wife is giving me a blank stare.

So the question is... are there any shortcomings about this version that I should be aware of as I start the learning process and await the opportunity to buy the upgrade?

Re: Have to tell someone!

That's a great bit of luck there Robbo! I wouldn't bother waiting for the upgrade before you start learning. The differences are in the details which you wont really discover until you become more familiar with the program anyway.
Nice find

Oh, I won't wait. I'll be lucky to get 3 hours sleep tonight. 100 minipulations, 75 new Pixalo posts, and a manual read later I will take a quick cat nap!

Re: Have to tell someone!

Dude, I wish I could've gotten mine for free.

I'm saving up to buy CS3 through my college (at a HUGE discount), but it's still outta reach for the time being.

There's a lot of good tutorials out there for CS2. Something you might wanna consider is NeatImage if you do a lot of high ISO work. I shoot low light, and the NeatImage does WONDERS to clean up the images.

Re: Have to tell someone!

I hear ya Chris! I will look into NeatImage. I shoot a lot of my kids' sporting events and my medium quality lense requires me to shoort at a higher ISO to get good shots at me fastest shutter speed from a distance. (I think I am explaing/understanding that correctly). The good news is that I can move my dream money over to the 300mm lense!

BTW - I am scared of your Tigers this year, but in the end... Boston shall prevail.

Re: Have to tell someone!

For noise cleanup I would recommend the Noiseware plug-in by Imagenomic. Oh....and good fortune with the CS2

Re: Have to tell someone!

Well done with that one. I thought I had a bargain at 80 from ebay for CS2 (boxed sealed and genuine) but for nothing. Happy processsing.

Re: Have to tell someone!

That was fortunate

As a beginner you will not find much difference between CS2 and CS3 so I would not worry about the upgrade yet. With the money buy your wife some flowers and tell her you will see her later. Photoshop can be addictive .

The learning curve can be very steep but lots of people manage it very well. You have to remember that CS2 is a program aimed at professionals in the print / image industry more than amateur photographers. Stick with it.

You will find that there are usually several ways of doing the same thing.

Some advice would be to keep it simple at the start and learn the basics well, tone and colour correction are vital to understand, also selections and selective corrections. Always use adjustment layers for these types of operation.

Finally NEVER EVER work on an original always work on a copy and save often.

Most importantly have fun

Re: Have to tell someone!

I've stuck with CS2, not bothered to upgrage to CS3 as I don't see the need for any more features for the type of work I do.
Get yourself a good book to learn from. My first was the Scott Kelby photoshop for photographers which was easy to work from.

Re: Have to tell someone!

Robbo, when I upgraded to CS3, it came with a "gift" from Adobe. In fact there was a choice of about 5 and I chose the 31 days training from Lynda.com. This was excellent and gave free access to Deke McClellands full set of tutorials on CS3 as well as tutorials by others. I spent many hours using these tutorials and learnt a lot in a relatively short time. I do not know if Adobe are still offering this gift.

The McClellands training cd was still in the box. I started watching and can see it will be helpful. My camera shop is still sitting on some CS2 'how to' books. As for the upgrade, all I have seen is a discount on Lightroom when purchased together. I'll keep an eye out for when the time comes.
