Re: Have you made a bean bag?

Yep that's what you use for the beanbags. But if you do use it to sit on, then those little balls crumble very quickly and you find that you keep on topping it up.

Very handy to make for the camera though in certain situations.

Re: Have you made a bean bag?

I've used coffee beans, those polystyrene things that look like S's in parcel packaging, and bird seed.

Not all at once.

Re: Have you made a bean bag?

Update

These are the granules / beads I couldn't find this morning

PLASTIC PELLETS POLYPROPYLENE Granules 750g on eBay (end time 26-Nov-09 07:08:51 GMT)

They are injection moulding beads that are rigid and totally inert.

Coffee beans is a good idea but they will go mouldy inside if left, and the mould if breathed in is very toxic.
Bird seed is a cool idea unless your photographing birds and they get a sniff

Anyone who wants to make one should also consider if they are going to take it abroad that when looked at on xray they do look rather suspiciuos and anything organic may at the least cause concern, and at the other end of the scale get you locked up.

Re: Have you made a bean bag?

Thanks for your input guys. I was thinking of using one to put on the car window or any suitable fence post when I don't want to carry a tripod long distances.

Re: Have you made a bean bag?

I've used split peas, lentils, rice and bird seed. My bean bag has an opening with zip fastening so that I can empty out/top up. Handy for travelling if weight is an issue (and x-ray machines!) as you can take the bean bag enpty and then buy rice (or whatever) when you reach your destination.

Re: Have you made a bean bag?

I've come at it from another angle: carry bird seed and peanuts (for any wildlife that might be interested) in a dog treats bag - which I use as a bean bag if occasion demands (and wildlife hasn't scoffed the lot!)

So carrying that to its conclusion any soft zippy pouch of the right size would do the trick I suppose?

Re: Have you made a bean bag?

I went to a bargain shop and bought a pillow that was sold for children, it is very soft feeling and is filled with tiny tiny white foam pellets, and being for a child it isn't too large, and the price was right 5 or 6 dollars, one can buy plastic balls in a craft shop, but these are very expensive, the foam ones are great as they can be caught in the rain with out getting rotten, they are waterproof. I was afraid that rice or beans would start to smell after getting wet a few times.

Sounds good for cameras - but "filled with tiny white pellets" sounds like an inhalation hazard for kids!

You could use rice, wheat or sand... Just need to keep it out of the weather (I guess)...
