Re: Haves, needs, wants and don't have a clue

Having the 50mm would give you a slightly smaller DOF over your 60mm but not really that significant (unless you have to have a shallower DOF!)

What about a wide angle? The popular one is the Sigma 10-20mm, which I use and find excellent Pixalo Photographic Equipment Reviews - 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM -

Re: Haves, needs, wants and don't have a clue

You ought to let you photography lead your choice of lenses. No point in buying one to plug a gap in your line-up if you never use it.

As you have a 60mm, I don't see the point of getting a 50mm unless you mean a faster one than the 60mm for very low light work.

I love my Sigma 10-20, but if you don't do the sort of photography where it excels, you will be better off buying other bits of kit.

Can't really agree with that advice for amateur photographers. A pro will generally be settled into his/her preferred genre, but most amateurs are still broadening their horizons, and are therefore more likely to experiment with new kit, and thus discover new genres that they might not otherwise have tried, if they'd stuck to the limits of their existing kit. I say go for a 10-20mm, and see the world a little differently

If you are broadening your horizons that is exactly what letting your photography lead your lens choices is. What I mean is there is no point in buying kit on the premis you might need it. If your new direction is to be sport or action, why buy a 10-20? If you don't do macro, and have no intention of doing any, why buy a macro lens? A 500mm prime will also give you a different view of the world, but unless you have an intrest/intent to do stuff that requires this sort of kit, it will just gather dust.

I remember someone on here ditching a 10-22 because he could not get on with it as 'it was too wide'. Classic example of buying to fill a gap in the kit rather than to complement what you want to do.

And the only way he could know that he didn't get on with it, was to buy it in the first place + give it a go

If there is an obvious lack of need for a particular lens, then one would not buy it. That's just common sense and goes without saying; I don't think anyone would argue with that

We buy experiences. So live a little! that's what life is for

Re: Haves, needs, wants and don't have a clue

There are still a lot of things that I don't own

More importantly, there are experiences which I would love to have the benefit of, but am unable to participate in. We all have to deal with our own disappointments ... and we have to be content with the things which we can + do enjoy

Here endeth the philosophical lesson

Re: Haves, needs, wants and don't have a clue

i have to disagree in having to have something and try it before you know if u need it.......... before i got the wide angle i knew point blank that i would use it, the times i took a shot and yearned for a few more mm on the wider side............ and the result now is that the 10-22mm is hardly ever off the camera!

I dont believe we buy experiences......... we Live them...... every minute of every day offers the chance for another experience.......... it may not be the one you would like but its still an experience. You make do with what you have and gain experience with that ...you dont buy it

Sure, some experiences are for free, I'm not saying there aren't free experiences, but there are some that you have to pay for as well, such as: A day at the fair/circus/a hot air balloon ride/a day-trip to (anywhere)/other outing or experience that costs money. Similarly, a lens provides an experience which you pay for, i.e. the use of it.

Where material things are concerned, what you are really buying is the use + enjoyment of that item; whether you rent or buy it, you are still, at the end of the day, paying for the use of it, whether you own/rent it temporarily or for the rest of your life. If/when the time comes that you no longer find it useful, then you dispose of it (sell or give it away) so that someone else can enjoy the use of it. Judging by the amount of second-hand photographic equipment that is continually circulating, this happens quite a lot, i.e. people buy stuff to try it, then later decide it's not for them. Nothing wrong with that.

'Gaining experience' has a completely different meaning to 'having an experience' or 'experiencing something'. Of course you can't buy 'experience', you misunderstood me if you think that's what I was saying.

Re: Haves, needs, wants and don't have a clue

course its not different.. gaining experience is exactly the same as having an experience........ if you have an experience in say. having your first studio shoot........... you are also "gaining" experience....... its just different words to explain what is essentially the same thing

Re: Haves, needs, wants and don't have a clue

'An experience' can happen either singularly or repeatedly, whereas 'gaining experience' is associated with repeated experiences of a particular activity in order to gain knowledge + understanding of it. When I experienced a hot-air balloon ride, I did not gain experience in anything, I just enjoyed a hot-air balloon ride.
