Help..

A brand new Sandisk Ultra 11 2Gb card has some of my best photos from a trip to Morar and when I try to upload them to computer it says files corrupted, cannot read.
It initially showed the 80 or so files when I connected the card reader but when I tried to copy to disc things went tits-up.Now I cant view them in the camera [it says no images in folder] but the camera says room for only 37 more pics on card so 'something' is on the damn card.
Any suggestions?

re: Help..

Sandisk cards usually come with recovery software on a mini CD. I've not tried this but others have and say it works well. If you don't have this disk or can't find it, please PM with your address and I'll send you mine.

I've put a Sandisk Rescue Pro disk in an envelope and will post it tomorrow or Monday - should arrive Tuesday with a bit of luck.

Dabs - hold on to yours - bound to be someone else who needs it! (Like me, if I lose the other one I have! )

Re: Help..

That's a good question - I've never had a genuine Sandisk card go bad on me, but there are loads of fakes out there. If the card was bought recently - within the last couple of years or so - it should have come with the Rescue Pro mini-CD and also a zipped storage wallet.

Spot on there Silky, all my Sandisks came with the pouch and disk.

The usual giveaway on the latest seems to be the word copyright incorrectly spelt

I have already emailed 7dayshop suggesting the card is faulty [one seems to work ok] and when they reply will bring up the lack of recovery disc issue.
Again,thanks for all the input.

Re: Help..

One of the characteristics of fake cards is that they work OK for a while, and then pack up.

Many cards sold on eBay are fake, and eBay have produced a guide which may be of help.

eBay Guides - FAKE SanDisk Extreme Compact Flash Cards Exposed

Don't try looking at the card that has already gone corrupt, but it may be worth looking at the other one.

I've not heard of any fakes from 7dayshop before, but the absence of a rescue disk and storage pouch is very suspicious. As far as I know, these are always supplied with genuine cards, and the Sandisk website also mentions the Rescue Pro software.

Hi Paul, writing this here so the others can read the latest.Recovery disc arrived but alas no luck.I cannot get at the files on the card ie I cannot transfer them from card to computer to let disc do 'It;s thing'.As I said previously,'something' is occupying 80 Raw files worth of space on the card but neither camera nor computer recognise anything as being there!!.Could I take/send the card to one of these 'data recovery' whizz kids that advertise their services?.Or maybe the card is simply knackered and data irrecoverable
Anyway Paul, and all, thanks for trying to help. Will pop disc back in post today.

Re: Help..

I know that you have said you will contact 7day about this but I have to ask again, have you taken my advice and phoned Sandisk to verify if the card is genuine?

Regarding file recovery, I believe (although have no personal experience) that professional file recovery is very expensive. The cheap alternatives almost always use the same free or cheap software options that are readily available to everyone. There was a thread a while back started by JMitchell when he had a file recovery issue. In that thread many different software options were suggested and in the end he recovered his files himself. I know you have tried the Sandisk software now but it seems you have nothing to lose by giving some of the other alternatives a try.

I really hope this all works out for you, data and file loss is never nice, especially when you are not even remotely to blame

John - I'm sure you don't have to do that - if you could copy the files to your PC, you wouldn't need the recovery software! I'm sure it should be possible to point the software to the card in the reader, and to attempt recovery without having to copy the files anywhere.

P.S. If still no joy, send me the card and I will have a go - no guarantees though!
