Help, Advice required

Hi Illuminiti
Can you pass on your collective opinions about the following Lens dilemma. I am quite partial to bird and wildlife photography, with the odd air show - steam rally and motorsport thrown in for good measure. I have a 40D with a Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 and a Canon L 300mm prime with 1.4 convertor. I am also planning to save for another body, such as the 5D (or maybe 1D??) in the future.

I have mustered enough funds to buy a canon 300mm L f2.8 with a 2x convertor, or a Sigma 500mm f4.5. My photography is now at a stage were I strive perfection in both Image quality and sharpness, as well as having lens's that are both practical to carry around and functional. I believe that the L series is the best glass to have (Or is it market hype??) but what IQ will I loose with the 2x? Sigma might not be quite up to the standard but I won't need a 2x. I was going to part ex my 300mm f4 as part of the deal, but should I try and keep it and go for the Sigma??

I dunno..... your help please.

Can't give a opinion on the 2 lens your considering except to say thats a serious amount of dosh to spend and I hope you make the right decision first time. As for L glass I have a 100-400L and taking photos with that I can see a difference (I think) between the L lens and one of the cheaper lenses I have.

Good Luck

Welcome to Pixalo Beefi

I can't give you a direct answer other than to say don't forget you will loose two stops with a 2x converter, and the 1.4x will give better IQ.

Mark has been showing us some good shots taken with a Sigma 150-500.

Whilst acknowledging that a prime will be better for IQ than a zoom, this lens will offer a greater variety of uses and is great value for money.

Re: Help, Advice required

As Graham says Mark has been getting some good results with the Sigma 150-500 lens.

I don't do any nature photography but I do own and use a Canon 300mm IS 2.8L lens regularly for my sports work on a 1D body.

I've never tried it with 2x telex but these were taken with a 1.4 Telex. They are also cropped as the combo wasn't quite long enough.

The 300 is quite heavy so I'm not sure how comfortable you would be walking around with it as I imagine you have to do a fair bit of walking for nature photography.

Re: Help, Advice required

There is one infallible rule about teleconverters - they magnify the prime's aerial image, so they magnify its defects.

I once proved, quite conclusively, that using a 250 converter behind a Hasselblad 150mm gave a poorer final image than magnifying the central area of the negative, when using a rigid tripod and Pan F film.

Look at it this way, all TCs introduce additional distortion and reduce resolution, because those are the laws of physics. The question then becomes, which compromise do you prefer to make, given what you want to achieve? TCs are much better than they used to be and, used behind the right lens, will often give you entirely acceptable results.

Personally, I'd go for the 300 + TC rather than the 500. You get more flexibility and the quality loss probably won't be that great.
