Re: Help! Filters Stuck Together

Do not apply heat - both filters will expand together.

Do not apply cold - both filters will contract together.

Do not apply anything - especially not force.

Hold each filter with only 2 fingers applying the least amount of pressure you can.

If you can't turn them, move only the fingers holding one of the filters and again with the least amount of pressure try rotating them.

If you can't rotate them, move only the fingers holding one of the filters again and repeat above. Keep doing that until you go all the way around the one filter. If it still does not come apart,

You have to really remember to apply only slight pressure on your grip. Typically, filters tend to warp ever so slightly over time and lose their "roundness" and bind.. If you grip the filters tight, you're only making them bind more.
The best method is to apply even pressure to the front of the top filter and back of the bottom filter and untwist.

Try putting the filters against the palms of both hands and then untwist. If this doesn't work, try it while wearing some rubber kitchen gloves.

If this doesn't work, I would get a cheap mouse pad, cut it in half and then put each side onto a small block of wood and then use that. Of course, this is pretty extreme.

hope this helps.......

Thanks J, you reminded me of the trick of using a rubber band on stuck jar lids - worked a treat

A lesson learned, not to overtighten filters!

And for the future to prevent it happening again...draw around the filter threads with a pencil...the graphite acts as a lubricant and will prevent them from sticking to each other or any of your other lenses. Don't forget to blow off any excess before using them though

Re: Help! Filters Stuck Together

A better way to remove filters is to NOT grip them with your fingers at all. Instead, apply the palm of your hand to the filter firmly but not too hard and twist your hand. Usually the filter will come away quite easily.

This method works well because you are applying an equal amount of pressure to every point of the rim at the same time. The only filters it doesn't work on are those which have a rotating mount like a polarising filter as that will just go round and round forever! For those the eleastic band works perfectly because actually it is doing the same thing: applying equal pressure all round the rim.

Cheers,
Rob

Re: Help! Filters Stuck Together

Good point about the polariser, Rob. The case in point was a UV + a diffuser, phew! It was also lucky that it was the top filter (diffuser) which was stuck to the 1st filter (obviously the UV), and not that a filter was stuck to the lens - that could get ugly

No, to be honest Charlotte, if you use the method I mentioned (palm of hand against end of lens/fliter and twist) they come off very easily. I have had some that have seemed either tight or warped but this method has always got me out of trouble. If your palm doesn't work, a flat pad of neoprene on your hand will definitely do it. A rubber glove works equally effectively :o)

Cheers
Rob

Re: Help! Filters Stuck Together

Another little tip if they get stuck again and this has worked for me on a number of times, is to drop them....Only a few cm's (not of a 5story building). Not sure why it works, but it tends to loosen them enough to open, also works on a lot of other things with a thread e.g. tapping a nut and bolt gently can help before releasing it!

Re: Help! Filters Stuck Together

Hmmm, sorry Loly but I have some filters that cost me £70 or more and I am not about to risk a scratch by dropping it from any height! I entirely hear what you're saying and for threaded items it does indeed work. Just that I am very particular about what I do with my filters. Never ceases to amaze me how some people spend a fortune on lenses but then let their filters get dirty, scratched and all sorts, failing to realise that the filter is another element of the lens!

I think I'll stick to my tried and trusted palms method, it has never failed me yet so not desperate enough to try dropping it ;o)

Re: Help! Filters Stuck Together

Yes, this method worked for me once - successfully separated one half of a plate from the other half

Seriously though, good thinking Lolyton. I know why it works, I just couldn't explain it To add a suggestion to this tho', that a landing mat of some sort be used, to soften the blow, e.g. carpet etc., do not drop them directly onto a hard surface. I have to admit that I would not like to try this one at all, as it might also loosen the glass itself.

Later: I typed this slowly ('cos I know you can't read fast) + meantime Rob replied. This reply relates to Lolyton's post (Don't know how to quote it while I'm in edit mode)

Re: Help! Filters Stuck Together

Those filter grips are useful and do the job. They don't do anything that the palm method doesn't do and a simple rubber band in your kitbag that you place around the filter for a proper grip works equally well. But hey, they aren't too expensive so if you really want a set, why not :o)

I'll stick to a rubber band and palms, it has never failed yet so I ain't gonna fix what ain't broke!.... spoken like a true English teacher LOL.

Cheers,
Rob
