Help needed for a newbie!!

Hello to one and all. Apart from introducing myself in the welcome forum, this will be my first post. I am sorry to present you with a problem so early in my Pixalo life, however I am new to DSLR photography and fear this request may be the first of many.......

I have recently bought a Nikon D200 body and a Nikon AF-S DX VR 18-200mm f/3.5~5.6G IF-ED lense (surely this lense wins a prize for the longest name!!) All was working fine for about 2 weeks, but now the lense refuses to autofocus properly. I went out today to take some shots in a local wood and the lense stopped focussing properly. I have checked that both lense and camera are both not in manual mode. The lense still focusses ok in manual, however there is no movement within the lense when the shutter button is pressed halfway down

I hope that this problem is something simple as I am very new to DSLR cameras! Although I have some experience with both film SLR's and point and shoot digital, please treat me as a relative novice as a lot of my knowledge is oxidised to say the least

TIA,

Alan

Re: Help needed for a newbie!!

Since nobody who knows anything has made any suggestions yet, you're stuck with me.

Are you absolutely sure that you haven't moved a switch or pressed a button to disable AF? I'm not sure how Nikon lenses work, but on Canon ones there's an MF/AF switch on the side of the lens.

Have you tried another lens?

If everything should work but doesn't, there may be some dirt on the lens or body contacts. Try wiping these with a clean cloth or tissue.

If that fails, it does sound as if the lens or camera may have developed a fault. It would be worth taking them to a camera store and trying them with other equipment.

We don't have problems, Alan, only opportunities!

I guess it'd be worth checking whether an alternative lens will autofocus. It sounds like it could be the AF motor which could be jammed or u/s but I'm just guessing, TBH!

Edit: just like buses: nothing and then we all come along at the same time!

Re: Help needed for a newbie!!

HI Alan

Firstly do you have another lens to try out ? If that works, it's the lens, if it doesn't then we have narrowed problem down to Camera.

Have you tried resetting the camera in the menu's . I have the D200 & somehow managed to screw up flash compensation & in the end the only way I could resolve it was to reset

Keep us posted

Re: Help needed for a newbie!!

I seem to remember the D200 owners moaning about a switch that can be turned on/off when putting the camera into a bag. Don't think it was the focus switch though.

I think the easiest way to check is if you can try a different lens on the camera. If the AF works, then try the lens on a different body. This ought to reveal if there is a fault on either.

If you don't know anyone with a Nikon, try a camera shop.

I'm sure one of the D200 owners will chip in soon.

Edit: Darn, that dave's quick off the mark...great minds think alike though!

Re: Help needed for a newbie!!

Thanks for the repies. I am afraid that the 18-200 is the only lense I have at the moment. The wife almost had a fit when she saw the price of that let alone the D200 body!!

Dave, how do you reset the camera and will this return it to factory default settings?

PMA Markulous thats what I like to see!!

Silkstone I have checked both lense and camera and both are on autofocus not manual. If I can't sort it I may take the body into Jessops to try another lense.

Thanks,

Alan

Re: Help needed for a newbie!!

Thanks for that Dabhand, I checked the switch you mentioned (focus mode selector) and it was in the correct position.

Stephano, the body was bought at Jessops, because they pricematched the online price of £779

Lense however a different matter. Price in shop £549 price online £437......

Shop assistant said that if he had a Nikon system rather than a Canon one he would have snapped it up

Re: Help needed for a newbie!!

On my Canons you can set a custom function (CF) to move the autofocus to another button other than the shutter, wonder if that may be posible on the Nikon ?

Also is the battery fully charged ?

Re: Help needed for a newbie!!

I would like to thank you all for your helpful suggestions. I took the lense and body into Jessops and established that the HSM seems to have packed up on the lense

Contacted the online retailer I purchased the lense from and replacement due tomorrow

Has anyone else had a similar problem with the HSM on Nikon lenses?

Thanks again,

Alan

Re: Help needed for a newbie!!

Good to see jessop's, where I presume you did not buy the body, being helpful too. They have had their share of knocks over a period, so well done to them for helping you out.

Re: Help needed for a newbie!!

Glad you're getting it sorted. I've not heard of any HSM issues with Nikon lenses, so I guess you were just unlucky on this occasion.

Re: Help needed for a newbie!!

As mentioned previously Dabhand, I did actually purchase the D200 body at Jessops. I think that the one of the main issues with online retailers is the concept of delayed gratification.... (Not good if you are impatient )If highstreet prices can match or come close to online prices then I would prefer to make my purchases face to face - and walk out with a shiny new piece of kit

Silkstone I am glad that the HSM problem I had is not a common one

Thanks again,

Alan

Must have missed that

Still good news that the problem is solved and you are not having to do battle with anyone. Except possibly OH
