Question HELP!! - Nikon D70 IR conversion

Hi everyone!

This is my first post here - I am hoping someone may be able to help......................

I am looking to convert a D70 to a purely IR camera. I have found an excellent site "LifePixel", who will convert the D70 for $250.00. My problem is this. I am in the Uk - which would mean packing the D70 off to the US. I am quite happy to do the actual conversion myself (the replacement filter can be purchased from LifePixel for $95.00).

However, I then need the focus to be calibrated. I have asked Lehmans for a quote to re-calibrate - they won't do it. Grays quoted £150.00!! More than the entire conversion cost from LifePixel.

So, my question is this - does anyone know of a company who will carry out the conversion and calibration - or just the calibration alone - for a reasonable cost?

Thanks - and looking forward to learning a lot here

Re: HELP!! - Nikon D70 IR conversion

Hi megaera and . IR is out of my league but I did a quick Google and this is all I could find. In the end you might be better buying one pre-converted but I didn't see any prices. An IR guru will be along shortly with some proper help

Re: HELP!! - Nikon D70 IR conversion

Thanks for your help, Stepheno!!

I love shooting IR - but to date, I just use the normal screw-in filter on the lens and my D2H. I really want to do some action shots - so a dedicated IR camera seems the way to go!

I look forward to hearing from one of the forum's IR gurus!!

Great forum, by the way

Re: HELP!! - Nikon D70 IR conversion

Hi Megaera & welcome to Pixalo

I too looked into the IR route for the D70 a couple of years ago, but bottled it when I saw the changes that were required. Annoyingly it seemed easier on other cameras bodies

Lots of questions have been asked about IR on here, but must admit it usually ends up with PS filters, or filters for lenses.

Out of interest have you any shots you can post of your IR work with the filter ?

Thanks for your compliment re forums

Re: HELP!! - Nikon D70 IR conversion

Chris - Thanks for your reply. I came across David Burren's site during my endless Googling! He seems to offer a very similar service to LifePixel - but I must admit I wobbled a bit at the thought of the postage cost to Australia!! Mind you, there's probably not a lot of difference in sending to the US.

Maybe some entrepreneur could set up an IR conversion business in the UK??!!

Dave - I don't actually have a D70 yet!! I have been shooting IR with my D2H - I tried with the D2X, but it is toally useless at IR. Huge exposure times - with the ISO cranked way up AND loads of +EV!!!

I have decided to buy a 2nd hand D70 - purely for conversion. I believe now - unlike when you were looking - the D70 is one of the best/easiest conversions.

Regarding posting an IR image - I will find it very embarrassing - as I am a rank amateur bumbling along. But I suppose you will get a good idea of how NOT to shoot IR..........so I will read up on the forum help "how to post images"...........and listen for your laughter

Good luck megaera, keep us up to speed if you find a suitable conversion - the results look pretty impressive from what I've seen.

Re: HELP!! - Nikon D70 IR conversion

A reminder that I should give IR a whirl - only requires removing the dust shield for instant conversion!

Re: HELP!! - Nikon D70 IR conversion

Ok - I'm being thick!! In order for me to make a fool of myself by posting my "attempts" at IR, I thought I could post images in this thread?

Please, could someone explain to me ( SLOWLY - words of one syllable!) how I post images? Can I do it within this thread - or do I have to upload into "My Gallery"

Sorry -

Re: HELP!! - Nikon D70 IR conversion

You have to upload the images to some webspave first as we don't allow attachments here. You can use the free space that we give to every member within 'your gallery' and then link it to a forum post, or you can upload them somewhere else if you prefer.

The benefit is you upload them here is we can assist if you have any problems plus your work will get more exposure and two chances of comments, one on the forums and the other in the gallery section.

If you need more detailed instructions for the gallery they can be found here but if you are still struggling after reading that, please just shout and we will be glad to help
