Help Please.

Does anybody have and know how to use Noise Ninja or the likes?

I was taking some pictures at my daughters graduation day (for want of a better expression) with the ISO wound out to 6400.
I had no choice as the venue was in a school sports hall with no lighting except for stage spots and the stage itself was some 75ft away.
A parent of one of my daughters friends asked if I would capture her childs big moment and, like an idiot, I agreed.

Anyhoo, the short end of it is:

Could I e-mail a large jpeg to someone and have them run it through a good noiseware package?
The Nikon in camera noise reduction and NX are obliterating any detail I had in the first place.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Help Please.

Did you really have to use 6400? I took photos of my daughters graduation last summer in a sports hall and used 1600 ISO. For many shots (on stage) the lighting allowed something like 1/200 at f5. Individual shots off stage were more difficult 1/25 at f4 (using an Image Stabilised lens). Only the latter shots showed any sign of noise but only at high magnification. If your shots are very noisy then specialist software may improve them but you will not be able to put back what is lost.

Here's an example, using Noise Ninja on my Sigma SD10, taken a couple of years ago

I'd read the dire warnings about noise on the SD10 so had avoided going above ISO800 'til one day I thought I'd give it a try - and made it more of a trial by shooting into bright light so creating dark shadows.

Needless to say, I never really worried about noise from that day onwards (and have had far worse detail-destroying noise on my 350D at ISO400!)

In the upper you can see some noise in the top, gone in the bottom after NN - both have the same NN sharpening applied (I use NN to sharpen all my web images)

Re: Help Please.

Thanks for the quick advice and offers of help all.
When I get home from work I will mail a file to those who want to take up the challenge.
Perhaps if someone does have a go they can post a before and after?

The reason I used ISO 6400 was,
I do not yet have an image stabilised lens.
I was using the kit lens at 70mm as people look a bit small from 70+ feet away.
This limited me to a max aperture of f5.6.
I could not hand hold much below 1/40th of a second.

I used the auto ISO function with the above parameters.

Re: Help Please.

Soup.

I also have NoiseNinja and can give it a whirl. Quick question - was it shot RAW or JPG?
Either way, send it over to martin -dot- mcneil _at_ gmail -dot- com... preferablt the RAW file if you have one.

Re: Help Please.

I'll send the raw for those that can work with D300 files.
It is 12 bit un-compressed so fairly large!

Re: Help Please.

As I am working late I will probably not be able to send the file until Friday evening.

I'm not in any real hurry and if the worst comes to the worst, I'll just say the picture didn't come out.
