Help please.

Has anyone come across this before.

I have taken a number of pictures and and previewed them all on the camera screen.
I transferred the pictures to my computer using windows explorer.
I opened capture NX and, for those who have used it, the browser shows a preview of all the pictures.

Three of the pictures, when I open them, are totally black, yet I can clearly see the large thumbnail image.

Any ideas anyone?

Re: Help please.

Here's a screen shot (ish)
It's the thumbnail with the yellow border round it.
The black area in the main window is the opened image.

Re: Help please.

Hmm, I guess that in theory you could have a RAW file with an embedded JPEG thumbnail where thumbnail is OK but main RAW file is corrupt

Susceptible card? Have you had it before using the same CF card?

Low power? Was there sufficient power when it wrote those images (the whole pic taking operation provides a fairly large 'hit' on batteries)?

Re: Help please.

I'm sure there was enough battery power.
If you look at the thumbnails the pictures before and after are fine.
It occurs again in three other images.

This is another D300 and it's a first for me to see this.

Re: Help please.

I would agree with Mark on this one depending on what format you where shooting in and how Nikon stores the files...

Its likely that the thumbnail was generated and stored fine while the full size shot seems to have suffered from some storage or writing issue.

Have you tried transferring the same files from the card to the computer using software other than Windows explorer? I doubt that is causing the issue but doing that would at least rule out one part of the process.

Re: Help please.

I gave that a go, well, I plugged the USB cable into the camera and viewed the files in NX without transferring them.
No difference.
I have re-formatted the card a couple of times and I guess I'll just have to wait and see what happens.

The card is a 4gb extreme 3 which, til now, has had no problems.

Re: Help please.

Did you reformat in the camera or the card reader?

Re: Help please.

I formatted it in the camera using the two button method.
What is moderately interesting is, the file size is 24 and a bit mb, so it surley wrote lots of data to the card.

I'm thinking that but no, it's my only card.
It wouldn't be so bad if I could make it repeatable but I can find no pattern to it.

Re: Help please.

As already said, it does sound as if the file was corrupted even though the embedded thumbnail was readable.

Were you able to see the image on the camera's LCD, and to zoom in on it? If so, the file was probably OK on the card, and the problem happened during transfer to the PC.

I had a similar problem some time ago and it turned out to be a duff USB cable from the card reader to the PC.
