Help - RAW to JPG

Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong here... I have a RAW file which I want to change to .jpg so I can get it uploaded/printed etc. When I look at the RAW it is a little dark, but otherwise okay. However, when I save it as a .jpg I get a lot of 'noise'... what am I doing wrong?!

Re: Help - RAW to JPG

What software are you using to convert it, and how are you actually doing the conversion?

At a guess, you're not actually converting the RAW file, but are looking at the embedded JPEG which is only thumbnail size. But I may well be wrong here!

Re: Help - RAW to JPG

I am using Digital Photo Professional software. I have got the full .CR2 file open and then I am pressing Convert and Save - save as file type of JPG.

Re: Help - RAW to JPG

Ah right - your camera gear button says Fuji! What camera are you using?

It's difficult to say what might be happening without the original file. If the image is underexposed and the software is automatically boosting it, that will exaggerate the noise. What ISO setting were you on?

Re: Help - RAW to JPG

Helena, try saving it first as a tif file and then as a jpeg, this often helps rather than going straight to jpeg from RAW when using files from prosumer cameras because they have a smaller sensor than the dSLRs have.

Let us know how that goes. If it s still bad, perhaps you would like to send me a RAW file attached to an email (robbarron@aol.com) and I'll see if I can work out what is happening for you.

Cheers,
Rob

Re: Help - RAW to JPG

Thank you Rob! I've emailed it over...if you can save it at all I'd most appreciate it!

Knew trying out new camera's at something so important was a bad idea!

That's Rob's problem not yours...it bounced because his settings don't allow for incoming files that large

Re: Help - RAW to JPG

Helena - do you have some webspace to which you could upload the file? Then just PM the link (URL) and it can be downloaded. I'd also be happy to look at it.

Paul - It's perhaps not a good idea to put your e-mail address on the forum unless you substitute [AT] for @ - the spammers can grab addresses.
