Help Using Raw

Hi, Is there a Tutorial or Guide regarding the usage of RAW.

The problem is that i was a medium format / film user, now having a digital camera and starting to learn new things... I have heard and seen photo's from RAW users along with the reviews. I set the camera to raw and off i went.

When i off loaded the photos to the pc (raw viewers installed) i got a message like "could not make image" or to those words.

If i was going to photograph something for someone i can't afford for this type of error as i may not get a second change so i reverted back to the faithful JPG.

is their a indepth guide / tutorial which helps newbies understand and use this type of format.

Re: Help Using Raw

I don't think there is a tutorial on Raw - but in truth, it is not really too different from any other editing except you can change more things like white balance and exposure etc.

RAW requires a two stage process. This put me off for quite a while. Also, you can't see the thumbnails in Windows without a bit of software that is a free download from Microsoft. I used to use this, but now use the RAW converter to view them.

This brings me on to the other thing you will need - a RAW converter. There are lots to choose from and they all have their own fans. Not sure if there are any freebies though other that Rawshooter which was bought out by Adobe to incorporare the technology into Lightroom. It is available from our downloads section here.

Some editing apps can handle RAW files too, but I'm not sure if you have the full control that a dedicated converter will offer.

You import your photos into the RAW converter where you will see the thumbnails. All you have to do is to make your adjustments then save the images as a tiff or jpeg where it can be topped and tailed in your editor. The original files remain totally untouched (another good thing about RAW) but if you open the RAW image again, you will get your tweaked version - unless you want to start over.

Once tried, most people won't go back, and the majority of our members shoot RAW.

I'll remove your other thread that you edited in the Tutorials forum

Re: Help Using Raw

Some RAW editing and conversion applications have their own tutorials. I use Bibble and there are some very good videos explaining the features and how to use them...

Re: Help Using Raw

There's nothing all that special about RAW - think of it as just another file format. The difference is that it contains the 'raw' data from the camera sensor, so you need to convert it to another format (JPEG, TIFF) to use in other applications. The advantage of RAW is that nothing has been lost by in-camera processing, and also the number of bits per pixel is greater than in most converted files. That means you can alter the tones - for example, boost the shadow details - with less risk of 'blocking' or posterisation.

The other difference is that most decent RAW editors/converters are non-destructive. The original RAW file remains unaltered, and the editing data is contained in a separate 'sidecar' file.

Re: Help Using Raw

If you still want tutorials, consider the Digital Photo Magazine who include a monthly CD with various tutorials. I notice in the current magazine (March 2008), they also have an offer of a special "How to Use Raw" CD Rom which includes 145 minutes of Raw tutorials. I am a magazine subscriber so I can vouch for their monthly CD's which have excellent tutorials. I would expect the "How to Use Raw" CD to be also excellent but it will cost you 19.99.

Re: Help Using Raw

Got to agree with that - the cover disc on Digital Photo is very good covering Photoshop and Elements - and they usually have one or two PSP tutorials too, although you can often look at the PS ones and use the same steps in PSP.

There are step-by-step instructions for all of the video tutorials in the mag too.
