High altitude aircraft

Just for fun sometimes I look at Flightradar24.com - Live flight tracker! to track aircraft flying over my house finding out the speed, altitude and destination and try and spot them if the weathers clear enough. I have seen quite a good image taken from the ground but even with a 400mm + x 1.4 converter + 24mp I have not been very successful.
Has anyone else tried this with any success. I'm talking about 30,000ft + ?

Re: High altitude aircraft

Clear skies often means an inversion layer. Photos below or above the layer tend to be ok. Anything through the inversion will be hazy.

The best time to take photos vertically is immediately after a cold front when the clouds have spread out - giving the white fluffy clouds we like for landscapes. Hot warm conditions with 'blue' skies are not useful.

(For information: an inversion occurs when the air above is warmer than the air below. There can be several inversions above each other but we usually can only see the effects of one or two. When the ground is heated by the Sun it causes bubbles of warm air to rise. These bubbles take with them the dust and humidity in the air. The bubbles will continue to rise until either the humidity condenses out to form a cloud (the bubble continues to rise within the cloud) or are prevented from rising any further by an inversion because the air above the inversion is the same temperature as the rising bubble. The bubble just spreads out like steam hitting the ceiling of the kitchen above the kettle. The dispersed bubble releases the dust and humidity in a layer of dirty air, which from the ground is not easy to see. When you get greyish blue skies, this is the inversion in action. You can sometimes see this in winter when smoke rises from a chimney and then suddenly travels horizontally - at the inversion layer.)

Re: High altitude aircraft

Just out of interest I thought I would post a picture of an inversion taken today. The greyish crud you can see just above the horizon is the dirt (dust, insects, moisture) that hangs in the air when it cannot get away. It looks really bad when you add the smoke from fires in the winter - a truly smoggy yellow colour (wouldn't want to breath it too long).

The layer here is quite thin at about 200-300ft (100metres) thick and at a height of 2000ft (600 M) but can be much thicker if the air is very still. You can see that the air above the inversion is much clearer and the air below is clearer but still a little murky.

Horizontally the visibility through this foul air is about 6Km / 4 miles but the furthest objects you can see on the ground are about 20 -25 Km / 15 miles.

I was quite surprised to see a strong inversion today because the high winds normally blow this away.

Taken through the perspex canopy and given a bit of a boost in pp.

Re: High altitude aircraft

Yes some thing I am looking at now I am at a interjection in the sky all aircraft from Sydney Brisbaine seem to come over our Town a remote mining town called Broken Hill NSW SA border we get lots of both civilian and military aircraft and if I am really lucky I might even get a a ocasional visit by the RAAF who use the local airport as a touch and run . I think they are trainee pilots

I have seen them come in really low in a huge Hercules aircraft almost touch the runway and of up into the sky I did catch them once but dam batteries in camera died

We do get a lot of vapor trails across the day time sky

Re: High altitude aircraft

Interesting shots. These are similar to what I was getting but what got my interest was a very clear image allegedly taken from the ground that was posted on the internet
