How do i copy artwork ready for print

Hi there having never done this to produce a pro look, an Artist i know wants is work Photographing good enough to have prints done, imagine you see an oblong shape print, and its signed by the Artist, or the Title is just below the print, often you see this type of print as a limited edition, ive Photographed images before, but when your dealing with oblong type image and it might need stitching together, i have never done anything like this, and also does anyone know of a printer who will produce this type of image at a reasonable price, a run of say 50 pieces

Thanks for any input you can give

Re: How do i copy artwork ready for print

I think you are referring to the 'Gallery' style of mounting where there is a bigger border at the bottom of the print. This can be reproduced digitally by making the canvas the size you want, then simply re-positioning the picture on the canvas.

With regards to actually photographing the images, smaller ones can be done by laying them on the floor and using a tripod. Care must be taken to get everything square though, and if you have a prime lens of around 35mm for a crop factor camera or 50mm for a full frame camera it should not introduce any distortions that will have to be corrected. Using natural shaded light ought to give you good light that won't bring colour casts but it is probably better to use a custom white balance.

Bigger pictures can be done with a bigger tripod and stepladder if necessary - don't forget your risk assessment and health and safety issues. the pros will have a studio with a mezzanine floor with a hole in it for really big pictures and this might allow them the luxury of a longer lens.

Then you have the issue of size. I'd imagine that there will be a requirement of various sizes up to 1:1, so you will probably need good re-sizing software such as Genuine Fractals to upscale images. Photoshop and other editing software will re-size images but I don't know how good they are compared to the specialist software.

I'm not sure how effective stitching images will be, but you will have to be able to keep the whole thing in alignment and probably move the subject along making sure that it does not move up or down, only along the selected path.

Re: How do i copy artwork ready for print

A tip I got many years ago, for copying large flatwork: put the work on the flloor; get a length of thin white muslin; drape the muslin round the camera and the artwork, holding it out of the field of view; light through the muslin, which will act as a diffuser and prevent bright spots on the target.

Photography isn't just about cameras and lenses...
