Re: How do I find number of shutter actuations?
Download Opanda IExif 2.3 Here once it is installing it will also ask if you want to install Opanda Power Exif, it's up to you if you want to install it, anyway, once IExif is installed open an image with it and click where it says EXIF at the Top Left corner.
now go to the bottom of the list and look at the 8th from the bottom up and it says Total Number of S.. it actually says Total Number of Shutter Releases for Camera. there you go.. Hope it was helpful (if you want to see the whole Total Number of Shutter Releases for Camera, go to the top and at the left end of the blue Entry bar your cursor turns to a cross like symbol, just drag that line to the right) remember that it has to be a JPG straight from the camera!!

Re: How do I find number of shutter actuations?
there is also a little program called
DR. Chung's Preview Extractor you can find it Here it also works like a charm. If you download this one, you have to press where it says Shutter Count and load the image. |

Re: How do I find number of shutter actuations?
You could get a rough idea if you have the camera set to record sequential file numbers. The last file (jpeg,RAW etc) ought to be the total number of that type of file recorded. Add them together and you have a figure you could work with.
If you use a folder system and/or start numbering from one every time you change a card this will not work. |

Re: How do I find number of shutter actuations?
Dabhand, it depends on how many digits are used. My Canon only uses four digits so once it reaches 9999 then next frame is 0000. My 20D is over 3 years old and now reads around 3000 but I know that is 13000 because I had the Camera from new. I guess a potential buyer would want to see the Number of Shutter Actuations providing it is not possible to alter this!

Tried opanda, didn't work. There was no "Exif" button in the top left corner.

Re: How do I find number of shutter actuations?
Try it with a JPG shot straight from the camera with no processing at all. Processing can strip out some EXIF data.

Even with elements 6? I shot it as raw, and saved it as JPG through Elements.

Re: How do I find number of shutter actuations?

in your case the conversion probably stripped it of all or maybe Elements doesn't transfer Exif data. set you camera to shoot Jpeg. If you put your cursor over the spot where the red arrow is, it will turn into a crosslike symbol, grab that line or separator (whatever you call it) and move it to your right so you can see the whole Total Number of Shutter Releases for Camera sentence otherwise just look for it to say Total Number of S.. if its to difficult just download DR. Chung's Preview Extractor. Hope it helps |

Re: How do I find number of shutter actuations?
Has anyone managed to extract the shutter actuations from a Canon camera? Is it possible that this data is not recorded in the EXIF?
Here's a small extract from the 'MakerNote' part of the EXIF of an unedited Canon 10D JPG. It gives the camera serial number and lots of other info, but there's no 'shutter actuation' unless it is the 'ImageNumber'. The actual file name in this case is IMG_6104.JPG and I know that this camera started at zero and was never reset, so 6104 is also the number of actuations. I'm not sure what the figures 161 in front of this signify. Unfortunately I don't have a JPG file to hand from a camera with over 9999 actuations or where the counter was reset. Code:
@0x00003ba=954 : <MakerNote> length 1372, Plain IFD scheme, 25 entries starting at offset 0x3bc/956 @0x00003bc=956 : <0X0001= 1> CameraSettings [ 3=SHORT 46] = @0x4ec=1260 @0x00003c8=968 : <0X0002= 2> FocusInfo [ 3=SHORT 4] = @0x548=1352 @0x00003d4=980 : <0X0003= 3> TAG_0X0003 [ 3=SHORT 4] = @0x550=1360 @0x00003e0=992 : <0X0004= 4> ShotInfo [ 3=SHORT 33] = @0x558=1368 @0x00003ec=1004 : <0X0093= 147> FileInfo** [ 3=SHORT 9] = @0x59a=1434 @0x00003f8=1016 : <0X0006= 6> ImageType [ 2=ASCII 32] = @0x5ac=1452 @0x0000404=1028 : <0X0007= 7> FirmwareVersion [ 2=ASCII 32] = @0x5cc=1484 @0x0000410=1040 : <0X000C= 12> CameraSerialNo [ 4=LONG 1] = 1720502425 = 'C89951353' @0x000041c=1052 : <0X0015= 21> TAG_0X0015 [ 4=LONG 1] = 2415919104 @0x0000428=1064 : <0X0008= 8> ImageNumber [ 4=LONG 1] = 1616104 @0x0000434=1076 : <0X0009= 9> OwnerName [ 2=ASCII 32] = @0x5ec=1516 @0x0000440=1088 : <0X0010= 16> TAG_0X0010 [ 4=LONG 1] = 2147484008 @0x000044c=1100 : <0X000E= 14> FileLength [ 4=LONG 1] = 1698238 @0x0000458=1112 : <0X000D= 13> TAG_0X000D [ 1=BYTE 512] = @0x60c=1548 @0x0000464=1124 : <0X000F= 15> CustomFunctions [ 3=SHORT 18] = @0x80c=2060 @0x0000470=1136 : <0X00C0= 192> TAG_0X00C0 [ 3=SHORT 13] = @0x830=2096 @0x000047c=1148 : <0X00C1= 193> TAG_0X00C1 [ 3=SHORT 13] = @0x84a=2122 @0x0000488=1160 : <0X00AA= 170> TAG_0X00AA [ 3=SHORT 5] = @0x864=2148 @0x0000494=1172 : <0X00A8= 168> TAG_0X00A8 [ 3=SHORT 10] = @0x86e=2158 @0x00004a0=1184 : <0X00A9= 169> WhiteBalanceTable [ 3=SHORT 41] = @0x882=2178 @0x00004ac=1196 : <0X00AE= 174> ColorTemperature [ 3=SHORT 1] = 5200 @0x00004b8=1208 : <0X00B4= 180> TAG_0X00B4 [ 3=SHORT 1] = 1 @0x00004c4=1220 : <0X0012= 18> PictureInfo [ 3=SHORT 24] = @0x8d4=2260 @0x00004d0=1232 : <0X0013= 19> TAG_0X0013 [ 3=SHORT 4] = @0x904=2308 @0x00004dc=1244 : <000000= 0> TAG_000000 [ 3=SHORT 5] = @0x90c=2316 @0x00004e8=1256 : **** next IFD offset 0

Re: How do I find number of shutter actuations?
This is supposed to work for the 40D, 450D, 50D and 1000D if you also have the Canon EOS utility installed. (Not tried it.)
astrojargon - 40D Shutter Count EDIT/ However... various people here are saying that only Canon 1D series cameras record the shutter count in EXIF, which is what I wondered about in my previous post. |

Re: How do I find number of shutter actuations?
I've heard before that only Nikon allow easy access to the shutter count info, if any at all. I have a little app called shutterclicks that someone made on another forum, but maybe if you google it you'll get something. Although, having thought about it, I think that might be nikon specific as well!

Re: How do I find number of shutter actuations?
The program I used to extract the data from the 10D file above is supposed to be fairly thorough. (I'll try it on a 40D JPEG over the weekend, but since I always shoot in RAW nowadays I didn't have one lying around!) The full EXIF data runs to several pages, and includes details of the embedded JPEG, custom function settings and a load of other stuff - but not shutter actuations.

Re: How do I find number of shutter actuations?
I did some looking around and found this little tool that might work on Canon, Casio, FujiFilm, HP, JVC/Victor, Kodak, Leaf, Minolta/Konica-Minolta, Nikon, Olympus/Epson, Panasonic/Leica, Pentax/Asahi, Ricoh, Sanyo, Sigma/Foveon and Sony.
here's the link if you try it and it works, come back and post so we know |

Re: How do I find number of shutter actuations?
Silkstone Quote; The actual file name in this case is IMG_6104.JPG and I know that this camera started at zero and was never reset, so 6104 is also the number of actuations. I'm not sure what the figures 161 in front of this signify. Unfortunately I don't have a JPG file to hand from a camera with over 9999 actuations or where the counter was reset.
On the Canon Silky, If you have Continuous numbering of the images the counter system will count up to 9999 and automatically takes into accout either wether you delete files on the CF card or use any amount of cards. This prevents images having the same file numbers so that file management with a PC is easier .It would be very easy to overite files with the same file numbers.Your 161 in front of the file number Silky is the folder number. Each folder number sequence is increased by one when every 100 picture files are taken. These folders are created automatically by the camera internal software. The folders still appear (although empty) when you view the CF card in a PC card reader when the files have been deleted. I hope this helps. Last edited by brian wright22; 11-10-2008 at 16:25. |

Re: How do I find number of shutter actuations?
Thanks Brian - I seem to remember that the 10D used to separate files into folders on the card in sets of 100, whereas later models put everything in one folder - at least until they reach 9999.
Anyway, that suggests that this particular EXIF entry is no more than the folder and file number, and doesn't give the number of actuations. For what it's worth (not much!), I've now looked at the EXIF from a 40D JPEG and can see no sign of an actuations field. |
